Hello From the Desert

Hi Folks,
Just joined the forum and looking to share the camaraderie and knowledge of those going before. My first mate and I am counting the days ( only 30 months to go ) until everyday is Saturday and we can turn our beloved Southern Yankee south for the winter. Should anyone pass through Dubai, please let us know and we'll roll out the fellow sailor red carpet!

Re: Hello From the Desert

Good to have you here, Brian and Vicki.

My home port used to be White Stone, Virginia, so "Hi!" from a fellow Northern Necker.

Re: Hello From the Desert

Dubai? OMG. Close to Formula One circuit in Abu Dhabi? (close is a relative thing).

Cheers! How is it out there? The region looks oh so awesome on pics and from the satellite. Is it hot/dry or hot/humid?

Dubai ... so romantic! Welcome!

Re: Hello From the Desert

We've been here seven years and watched a city being born. The town has actually become a much more enjoyable place to live since 2008 now that the massive growth and building has slowed down. We're only an hours drive to the Formula One, and there is always something to do in Dubai. Weather in the summer is very hot and humid, as our home is only a 10 minute walk from the beach. This time of the year until April is devine....low to mid '80's, no humidity and blue skies. Sailing is OK with good breeze nearly every day beginning at 12 noon, but you go out and either go left or right up the coast....not many cruising destinations within a days sail. The city is 90% expatriots from all over the world, which makes it very nice and interesting to see how everyone gets along. While a very good experience for the family, we're still looking forward to returning home and sailing the east coast and caribbean!

Re: Hello From the Desert

Welcome. Only 30 more months to go! Man, do I know what that feels like. It's tough and like blisters on the hull, you just have to grind them out.

We are friends with Matt and Wan on McDuck, who were in Dubai for a year or so. They kept their Dean cat in Fujairah. Another local sailor on Shamal, you may know, we met in Chagos.

Hang in there.
