Hello from South Korea

Greetings to all,

We've recently bought a 40 foot ketch in Ft lauderdale and plan to cruise her back to Korea starting in late November.

As of now, she is being prepared for offshore passage making.

We are new to American waters.

For the first leg, we Plan to head down to Panama via Key West and the Yucatan Channel.

Has anybody been this way in late November early to mid December?

Does anybody have any thoughts about a good route? Is it best to cross the Gulf Stream in the Florida Straits and sail in the counter current off the North Cuban coast?

Or is it better to stand off and head directly from Key West to the Channel?

What kind of wind and current action can we expect in the channel?

What kind of distance might we realistically expect to make under sail and Perkins 4 - 236?

We'd love to hear from anybody who has actually done this trip at this time of year

With thanks

David

PS we are also looking for some good crew if you 'd like to come along!

I did a job in Pusan for a few weeks.
Korea is one hell of a go ahead country!

Make sure your nav is correct... dont wanna sail too far north!

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Its good to have you here. The 4-236 is definitely my favorite boat engine for a large boat. They use about 3.5 liters per hour so it depends on how muck fuel capacity you have as to how far you can get motoring.
kind regards,

Perkins fuel use

J

Thanks for that figure. I estimate something similar on use. We will be carrying about 600 Litres.

Hello David, we once had a David Halloran as City Commissioner here in Key West.
I also have a sailboat with a Perkins 4.236 engin and have traveled Key West to Panama a number of times.
November and December are good months to travel in this area, just consider November is the last month of the hurricane season and determine your hurricane holes.
Getting across the straits and traveling the Cuban coast is a good idea, however, the Cuban Coast Guard will be tracking you after you are within 14 miles of the their coast. If they appear to be tracking you or are approaching you, sail perpendicular to the coast and they will back off.
What kind of sailboat do you have?
My 45' ketch averages 150 miles per day.

It seems my grandfather was the only one of his twelve brothers who ended up in London. My name is uncommon in the UK.

Excellent you are just the guy I need to talk to. I am most concerned about 'northers' in the channel and big ships.

Please email me direct at my name (all lower case and no spaces) at hotmail dot com

I plan to leave it fairly late in Nov but I'd like to get through Panama before Christmas - when, no doubt, the whole place shuts down.

Yes, it looks it from the charts - I do not want to mix it up with the Gulf Stream too much - looks like there is a Cuban coast counter current.

Good info - thanks. Do you think a Q flag might also help?

Will do

What kind of sailboat do you have?

40 foot, steel, Alioth Joshua, built 73, same careful ownership since 75, ketch, Cutter, double ender, external transom hung rudder (Aries Vane) with wire controlled tiller to centre cock pit, 17 tons, red color, SV Laloubi. Designed and built in France for solo circumnavigation.
My 45' ketch averages 150 miles per day.
I'd be real happy with 150 a day
