Talking Hello from Sleepy Eye, MN

I am new here and look forward to learning a lot and eventually helping others learn.

I have zero experience sailing and will be buying a boat and taking some classes this summer hopefully. Also what is a good age to get kids on the water?

Welcome to the CF. I would say that a mature 6yo should be ready for a boat ride. Remember always keep a life jacket on them. Be safe. Good luck.

Re: Hello from Sleepy Eye, MN

We have a small lake like 3 blocks from our house but we are planning a move to Seattle area in March 2014! I can honestly say that I have never sailed but am fascinated by it and when I'm retired (I'm only 21 so I got a ways to go unless I win the lottery!) I really would like to circumnavigate with my wife. I figure from now to then I can both learn and save for a boat able to do this. We have 2 boys. Our oldest will be 2 in about a week and our youngest is 3 months! I look forward to making sailing part of our lives as well as our childrens lives.

Re: Hello from Sleepy Eye, MN

Hi, Welcome Aboard, sailingnate,

We've met cruisers on 20 ft. boats with one kid aboard, born during their travels, so I think age is not relevant. Parents' vigilance is.

Seattle gets pretty cold in winter, though not to MN standards, and much of your beginning sailing will probably be in spring through fall. IMO, start with a small trailer-sailer, and trust yourselves to know when it's time to move up. There's plenty to learn to keep you busy. It's different from driving an SUV. There's heaps of rules of the road, and those sorts of technicalities, and then there's learning how to use your boat to its best. Starting small limits your risk, and may actually make it more fun. Wow, you'll sure know a whole lot by the time you retire, if you pay attention! :-)

My two cents.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. I know you probably didn't solicit advice but I'm going to recommend taking the sailing lessons first, then think about buying the boat. You'll learn more about what kind of boat you really want while talking with other sailors and getting ideas from the those who already sail.
If there is any kind of sailing club near you then that'd be the place to go.
Seattle sailing will be much different from MN sailing so maybe hold off on the boat purchase until then unless you are buying just a temporary sailing vessel to learn boathandling skills.
kind regards,
