Hello from San Francisco

Hello!

I am in (sometimes sunny) San Francisco and have decided to put my dream of sailing into action. I am 31, just out of law school and have passed the bar! I am hoping to work the next few years to save money, pay off debt (i.e. law school), beef up my skills and get a boat of my own.

It's actually a 5-7 year plan, and I figure starting now can't hurt. In the short term, I'm going to be visiting the Cal Sailing Club for some lessons/equipment and am looking at a US Power Squadron class. Happy for any other suggestions.

I'd starting doing research on slips in the area and didn't very far. If anyone knows of a marina that will let people live onboard, within/around the bay area please let me know.

Until 2018 (2 blue moons in a year!) and beyond, I'm sure I'll be visiting this forum often.

Welcome to the Forum. I hear that Half Moon bay is a nice place, I don't know about live aboards, but the tie ups there are not too expensive.

I didn't know attorneys had "a life" since they are always doing billable hours. Good luck, and I hope you find a niche permitting you a good bit of leisure time so to enjoy boating.

I can understand your joy in passing the bar. Expect it was like when I passed the CPA exam on the first attempt which only about four percent of candidates achieved in those times.

Re: Hello from San Francisco

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I assume you are referring to San Francisco on the west coast of the U.S? If that's the case then it is truly one of my favorite places. I spent a year there in the mid 60s. Many years ago there was quite a group of liveaboards in Sausilito. I know there is a bunch down in City of San Leandro Marina? Don't know exactly what the wait list is but very affordable but a long motor in and out and the water depth is tricky. Enjoyable place.
Congratulations on the bar exams. My grand niece passed hers a couple years ago in Honolulu. We're all pretty proud of her.
kind regards,

Re: Hello from San Francisco

Welcome aboard! The Cal Sailing Club is very reasonably priced and the US Power Squadron is a very good start for learning about boating.
