I've been browsing this site for a couple days now, and thought I would take the time to say hello. I've been thinking about signing up at a nearby sailing school, and thought I would see what I could learn before the class starts.

Good idea to take the lessons, but then you have to get out there on a boat, and put the learnings to use before they fade away. Unless you're really different from the rest of us, you'll make a few bonehead mistakes, too. Actually that's the best way to learn.

Take lessons if you can and the best thing to do even if you get lessons is to sign on as crew for who you might think is a competent skipper.

Hi John,

A buddy of mine, myself and my wife have all signed up for Basic Keelboat at the Presidio Yacht Club in the Bay Area. Hopefully it will be very informative. None of us have any sailing experience, but all three of us are motivated and interested in learning about sailing.

You mentioned signing on as crew with a competent skipper. That's a good idea. My wife and I recently joined a local flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and one of the officers is a sailing instructor. I think I'll see if I can sign on for one of his over night trips. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good luck on your course. Attitude and willingness to learn is the key. Yes, pursue the Coast Guard Auxiliary sailors. They definitely are safety conscious and are stickler for rules. You'll learn a lot.
