Hello from Philly -- Looking to learn to sail

Hi All,

I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, I've sailed Dyer Dinghies and Sunfish, would like to eventually get a boat of my own probably ~30', first will probably take ASA course soon, also wondering if anyone has ever done a learn to sail vacation in the Caribbean?

Look forward to learning a lot from the site.

Thanks,
Alan

Learn to sail vacations work fine. We did the two ASA courses after the first one as a vacation in San Diego. It helps to do all the reading and book work before you go. There is a lot of it and if you can pass the exam it feels better at the end.

Anything that gets you out on the water is a good thing. Delaware River is not the easiest place to sail. If you can master that you really can sail anyplace. We did our sea trial there in our current boat. 25 knots of wind with a mid tide current and a bit of mist. Down right nasty place. Still can't beat the Rivers Inn view over in NJ below the DelMar bridge at sunset. Hope to get back in a few weeks.

Thanks for the response, hadn't thought about San Diego, but that sounds like a good option too. Yeah, I'm thinking of doing the first course in Philly.

San Diego is nice. You can set your watch by the wind. We did a live aboard course and it was cheaper than hotel rates in downtown. Just go someplace nice! It's all about having fun.

Hi Alan and welcome aboard. Learn to sail vacations could be cool. We've been donig a lot of racing lately and we are working up a group to go to J-World and learn from the pros next year.

As Paul says to get the most out of it study well before showing up.
