Talking Hello from PA

Hi everyone!
I'm a middle-aged IT architect/cloud/devops engineer, originally from NYC, with dreams of circumnavigation. I used to sail a bit when I was younger (J24s) and always loved the ocean. I'm starting my five year plan to get experience, get the family on board, and make this dream a reality.

I've taken ASA 101/103 and my wife and I are in the planning stages of a learn-to-sail vacation some time in July in the USVIs. The thought was to do an ASA 103, 104, 114 series as a learning vacation to ensure we enjoy the life, don't get seasick (too badly anyway), and can handle ourselves. If all goes well, we'd like to get out on bare-boat charters a few times and eventually get our own boat.

Looking forward to reading up on this forum and learning from folks who have been out there.

Re: Hello from PA

Hello Derek,

welcome here. You seem to have a solid plan, but don't worry too much whether you end up circumnavigating the world, just doing a transat once or find happiness in coastal and island cruising. I think this kind of decision is best delayed until the time is right.

Against sea-sickness there are quite a lot of remedies for this, some of them even work. I get sea-sick also, so it's just a matter to find something that works for you. For me tablets with 50 mg Dimenhydrinat and 50 mg Coffein work like a charm even for my son, who's a real barf-artist.
