Hello from Goulais River ON.

Well I just wanted to say hi to everyone. I'm in Goulais River ON CA, which for those of you that don't know it's just north of Parrisian Island on Goulais bay, in Lake Superior. I've grown and live on the water most of my life, so naturally I have a like for boats, I would have to say more recently one for sailing. I have not bought, or for that matter, tried sailing yet, but have alot of ambition to and hopfully with everyones info I can make good decitions on buying, building, repairing, rigging, sailing, to name a few and most important of all......enjoying. Welcome aboard! We had a chilly 58 degrees F here this morning at 8AM. How's sailing in 40 below? Just teasing a bit. I've always wanted to try lake sailing. Just imagine all the weather and waves of the ocean but in fresh water?

I was stationed in Thunder Bay aboard the icebreaker Samuel Risley for six years. I seem to remember a lively ice boating club there at the time. That's a way to satisfy your sailing needs when it's -40! Not to mention they'll also satisfy your need for an adrenaline and speed rush all at the same time.

Back in the 80's they used to have a Thunder Bay to Duluth race on the ice with all manner of machine, engine and sail driven. We even managed to haul a few pick up trucks out of the ice when they tried to cross our tracks in the ice!

Welcome, MRGL! This is a great sailing community, and there is always room for a new member! Find a friend with a sailboat, get out on the water. I'll bet there are more than a few of us who would be glad to have you along for a sail. Then get yourself a boat and join us on the water!

Greetings from Thunder Bay. I was fortunate enough to meet a lady from Goulais River while on a kayak circumnavigation of Lake Superior in the summer of 2007. There were a lot of private camps (cottages for you non-Northern Ontarians) along the shore and it was getting late, and a storm was approaching. We had asked her about camping on a small island just out from where her camp was. She suggested not to go out to it because it was a native burial ground. She could see the concern on our faces and at first offered her lawn for us to camp on, but after only a few minute conversation, she upped the offer to stay in her camp. She was going back to town and left it open for the two complete starngers she just met. We decided to stay in our tents on the lawn, but her hospitality was unforgetable. I think she owned a store there. If you know who she may be please pass my regards on to her.

And of coarse good luck with your future sailing! I plan to do a lap around the lake by sailboat in a couple years to retrace our trip. Some of the nicest paddling was from the Sault to Wawa. It was also the best weather we had in 8 weeks of being on the water.

Been looking for a boat for 8 months (on the web). In the flesh it took 3 days.
