Hello from Georgia

Hi. I am looking to learn more about sailing this upcoming year with my main desire being to sail across the Atlantic (either to or from Europe) this year before I go off to college (I've taken a gap-year). I know a tiny bit about sailing and know knots for scouts, but am without a boat and am looking to crew.

Re: Hello from Georgia

Welcome to the forum. GA and RI, two of my hangouts. Born and raised in GA, live and boat part time in RI when I'm not in FL.

So where in GA and RI? If RI for college are you heading to Brown?

Re: Hello from Georgia

G'day Johnboy,
I'm not sure if US colleges are the same as the UK's, but if so they may well have a sailing club. If your goal is to one day cruise, get involved with either your varsity club or a local saling club just as soon as you can.
As you'll soon learn, newbie keen crew are the bread and butter of any racing fleet - without them some yachts would not make the start line.
Enjoy both college and your time on the water,
Cheers
JOHN

Greetings JBB.... Welcome to CF...
Wot they said plus hanging out in nautical bars/places... thats where much of the planning/selecting happens... can't beat a commune over tankards for finding out the 'real person'...

There is a very active sailing community on Lake Lanier. I belong to a couple of sailing clubs. Send me a PM for contact info if you are interested. I am sure we can get you out on some boats.

My daughter has lived in Providence the last 4 years so very familiar with RISD. Also used to live in Gainesville GA so know it pretty well. Spent many weekends on Lake Lanier.

Now live in Gainesville FL. Can't seem to shake that name.

PS. Daughter got a job on Martha's Vineyard and is moving. Want a good deal on a condo in Providence?

Re: Hello from Georgia

Thanks for the offer, but I am not that forward thinking to be considering a condo for next year.
