I actually learned how to sail on ice first when I was about 12 years.
Me and my two brothers made DIY ice yacht.
It had two meter long skates from Esla kick sled, a rectangular platform just about 15 cm from ice and two A-frames on both ends of platform joined by a tube.
Abobe that we has home made sail.
Steering was done by shifting either to the back or to the front depending where you wanted to go. We easily did close to 100km/h on gusts. Good fun until it snowed and ice was covered.
Later I sailed around Helsinki and Åland Islands.
Now I have lived half of my life in Austrlia and New Zealand as a crew.
Last year, I bought my first sailing boat, as my profile name sayx, it is 51 years old catamaran. It was the cheapest cat available and needed repairs. Nothing too difficult for a Finnish guy who has handyman skills and lots of SISU.
But it is just a coastal cruiser so not sailing this one to Finland[emoji2]

Hi Heikki

Clad to see there are someone not that war away 😁

It’s been a while of last time I was here. Sorry for that.

My dream is to visit great barrier reef and that Australian water seems so blue, whould love to dive there.

Your right about that there is no obstacle to great if you have enough Sisu and couple of Pe…..e aswell.
That icesailing sound guite fun, 100km/h wow!

Hi there.

Canada is definitely best place to be for a Finn if not in home country.

Re: hello from Finland

Mika:

Take a swing by British Columbia. On my wall hangs a picture painted by a Finnish lady from Sointula, born and brought up there. Sointula on Malcolm Island in Queen Charlotte Strait was settled in, if I recall, 1901 by a group of Finns who had left economically benighted Finland and come to British Columbia a few years before where they had found work in Lord Dunsmuir's coal mines around Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.

Being less inclined than some to put up with the working conditions offered by the likes of Lord Dunsmuir, and living up to the fearsome reputation Finns had aboard sailing ships at the time, these people skived off to Malcolm Island in Queen Charlotte Strait and established a socialist community there. They called it "Sointula" [what else would Finns call a utopian community? :-)]. In those days, in polite society, socialism was called "utopianism", and that is indeed the characterization the settlement bears unto this day. In Sointula you will find the oldest, continuously operating co-operative society in Canada, which, contrary to some local people's opinion, does include Thunder Bay some 2,700 Km.s to the east. The co-operative, established under the leadership of one Matti Kurrika, still runs the general store in Sointula and it is a nice place to re-provision you boat. What the store may not have in breadth and depth of inventory it makes up for in ideological purity :-)!

Matti, like a lot of visionaries, was hard to get along with, and the settlement fell apart as certain members took exception to his leadership style. Even so, there is a Finnish je ne sais quoi - a certain understated harmony - to the present town.

Scowegians of every kind have had a very considerable influence on the development of British Columbia given that the province, well into my time here, relied heavily on forestry and fishing for its economic development.

In anticipation of your arrival, here is a brochure showing the harbour at Sointula. Once you are there, you may chuck overboard any wish you may have to go where the coconuts grow :-)!

Please post in English, it is required by the rules.

This is so we can moderate disputes. No Google Translate is not sufficient.

Thanks.

The "local" sea is Barents sea, mostly coastal motor boating here. I've been sailing on Purjelaivasäätiö's Swan 65 Vahine mostly N Atlantic. Last summer from Copenhagen to Reykjavik. Propably in january Atlantic crossing to east from Martinique to Canaries.

Hi Teddydiver

sounds like nice trips. Just checked your location on map and my thoughts ware that you sure are north

Visited any Russian waters while there? I think there might be some interesting finds.

Open water time must be pretty short there?
