Hello from Chesapeake bay!
Hello from the Chesapeake bay!
I have been working on restoring a 1972 Columbia 36 since this past July 2023. She sails, she motors, she lights up at anchor, and there is still a LOT left to do! But I'm having tons of fun, and would enjoy the chance to ask for some input and wisdom. Thanks for having me here!

I love the area except for the crabpot minefields!

Nice! I'm by Hart Miller Island. We have the beginnings of a Columbia battle fleet.
They're solid cruisers! I'll have to pick your brain about how to deal with some of the quirks and idiosyncracies.

Have been to Hart Miller, it is just around the corner. Been there a couple time and spent some nights at anchor up by you.
Quirks and idiosyncracies..... Biggest one for me is the prop being behind the ruddder and lack of prop wash in reverse. I have gotten much better at using the prop walk to my advantage when docking. Luckly the rudder is huge so is doesn't take much way on to actually gain stearing.

Yes! Gives me a chuckle that someone else noticed the lack of prop wash.
I'd be curious if you found any ways of accessing/cleaning the bilge areas, especially the spaces leading to under the gally and head.
I saw you posted about opening up and cleaning your fresh water tank-- getting ALL those screws out of the floor was an ordeal for me!

Re: Hello from Chesapeake bay!
I'll be back in the Chesapeake in a few months. Also near Sparrows Point. Perhaps we can sail together. Might be fun.

I don't use the original watertank under the floor down the companion way stairs. Previous owner installed two stainless tanks, one under the v-birth and one under the aft starboard birth. With those two tanks I have more freshwater onboard then I have ever needed. The original tank under the floor was full of old nasty water when I got the boat and I did empty clean it out and have left it open since. Every now and then I consider bringing it back in service to get the water weight down lower in the boat and maybe remove one of the stainless tanks to gain some storage back.
One of my projects for this winter is probably going to be cleaning up bildge and repainting, so will see how that goes.

Consider a pump-up type cheap garden sprayer. Use hot water, dish detergent, and some bleach. Occasionally, Jim has used spray de-greaser, and followed with the hot water to rinse it all down, then bail out the grungy water, and dispose of properly, ashore.
Ann
PS. Such a sprayer, if painted black, can do double duty as a source for warm shower off after a swim. (Don't leave it in the sun too long, it will get very hot.)
