Re: Hello from Afghanistan

Thanks boatman61, and to everyone else thanks. Good site. I believe it's going to help me alot. Have many questions, that I'm sure have been asked and answered before. Will try to find them in the threads before asking. I have ordered the Annapolis Book of Seamanship 3rd edition revised and Around-The-World-Sailing Guide. I think they might be good.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm glad I joined Cruisers Forum, it's going to help me a lot, and it's fun learning from those with so much exprience. Just the information in the various forums is considerable. I have wanted to do some serious sailing since I was a kid, been a scuba diver since I was 13. Well, it looks like now, I just might be able to make it happen. Thanks again.....Sam

Thanks Sailor g, my new life started when I came here, then when I met my now wife in Thailand, well, if somebody would have told me 3 1/2 years ago that I would be doing this and be a restaurant owner in one of the coolest places you've ever seen, and on top that fixing to buy a blue water boat, and head out, I would have thought they were nuts. But I've never been one to stay on the porch. Thanks again......Sam

I was just in Afghanistan last year. I was thinking the same thing. I went on R&R to Houston area. Found out there was a boat show and took a look. Since then, I've been browsing the forums searching different topics, took ASA101 from Kemah (SE of Houston) and looking for my first boat. I'm in Germany right now and waiting for orders but I might be going to Ft. Campbell, KY next.

If anyone things I'm nuts for wanting to get a sailboat, then I'll just say "Thanks".

Welcome to CF. Plenty of other nuts here so you'll fit in just fine.

Thanks Dan for the welcome. A lot of like minded people. Good, very good.

Re: Hello from Afghanistan

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good luck in finding that "right" boat. You've listed some good ones there. My favorite would be the Tayana. We've got a regular poster with a Formosa and she can tell you all the attributes.
kind regards,

Re: Hello from Afghanistan

Thanks John, Looks like I'm going to buy a boat that wasn't on my original list. But, from what I've read, and from talking to people, this is a go anywhere boat. It's a Contest 33. Opinions please. Sam

Re: Hello from Afghanistan

After being advised by someone I had look at this boat, I decided to decline. The search continues.
