go for it matt.....building boats is fun and rewarding whatever your age. A large amount of science reasearch is done by reasearching the reasearch. The normal protocol is to acknowlege all your sources. I would love to see what would happen to students if they had to "learn" everything before they gained from others.......brain surgery anyone ? As for "interesting" sources of information, the internet has to be one of the more dubious.

Here's one of my plywood projects. 9'7" and very primitive. According to others I guess I'm a bit childish for someone eligible for senior discounts. Just completed the dolly using all plastic, stainless and aluminum to keep ahead of the corrosion. So far I've got the cost of two sheets of 1/4 inch ply and some Douglas fir 1x lumber and some epoxy and filler. Maybe I'll have $100 into it when I get done with the dinghy using things I have around here.

matt, good luck with the dink, i built mine out of "doorskin" sandwiched between two layers of heavy mat fiberglass. light and strong, though small and unstable. (6'6" X 42") it was a ton of fun building that thing. all four days of it...

i like your choice of topic regarding your up-coming composition. when is it due?
i may contribute some media, though anonymously of course! hehe
wouldn't want to embarrass myself, now would i?

I suggest that in addition to the cruising logs mentioned earlier, that you recognise the extremes of cruising lifestyles from the Pardey's minimalist approach to the true edwardian style (today epitomised by yachts such as mirabella series) where one has a chap to pull on all the ropes, do the navigation, and take the wheel when sufficient posing has been done, then there are several more chaps for the food wine and other services.

Reading the Pardey's boooks would be useful, plus "Sell up and Sail" by Bill and Laurel Cooper.
