Hello CF

Hello Cruisers,
Hopefully, someday soon I will be able to call myself a “cruiser”. My Grandfather, Maurice Variuer, took me sailing in the Great Lakes as a boy, taught me the basics. He lived in Port Huron, MI at that time and crewed at the Port Huron Yacht Club. He retired after 30 years in the Coast Guard. I wonder if anyone here knew him. I miss him very much.

In my late teens I did a salmon season in Alaska, riding a commercial vessel from Seattle to Bristol Bay. I worked as the galley cook on the voyage north. On the way up we hit ruff seas through the Aleutian Islands. Thirty foot swells changed my life. 10 weeks at sea. I miss the sea.

I moved back to Michigan, twenty years ago, and started a family, and my first career as a Chef. I worked my way up to owner, then sold out 10 years ago. Using the business knowledge I have been a successful entrepreneur, building and selling. kids are in college and high school and I’m divorced now.

For about a year now, I have been closing a big sale and contemplating buying a sailboat and relocating to Puerto Rico. Actually just bought tickets for two weeks in early November, to get a lay of the land.

I joined this forum to learn, maybe find some folks to crew with, before starting my sailing career. I have been reading everyones posts well into the morning and found your fellowship heartening.

Yours,
BH

Thanks for the welcome GordMay. My Grandfather and Grandmother were both born and raised in Windsor, retired in Port Huron, MI. If you ever need a crewman on the Great Lakes, I would volunteer.
