Hello All!

Heya everyone!
My name is Levi and I am verrrry new to this. I was in the Coast Guard for six years as an electronics tech. I spent most of my time on buoy tenders so I know a little about rules of the road and whatnot. The only sailing experience I have had was helping one of the officers sail an abandoned vessel back to harbor, and even then I didn't get to learn anything, just help with watch standing.

I am very interested in the liveaboard life. I am going to culinary school in Virginia and am hoping to take some sailing lessons soon. I plan to begin the liveaboard life in 2-3 years when I leave Virginia. I would love to meet with people around here who are experienced in sailing and living aboard. I am a quick learner and I tend to research things to the point of no return. Thanks for allowing me to join the community and I hope to learn tons in the next few years!

Re: Hello all!

Welcome to another Virginian! There are plenty of opportunities to learn, depending on where you are in VA...the Bay or up in NOVA, either one, I do not yet have my own boat either and have wonderful friends who do, all very gracious. I could go on boats all the time if didnt have to actually work for a living. There are a couple good places if you are wanting to learn formally as well, again dependent on where about you are...

Re: Hello All!

Excellent, we just came off the Bay for the day, was a most beautiful day to be on the water, caught some perfect winds, saw some freighters, was great! We're in VB too...plenty of opportunity to learn to sail!

Re: Hello All!

Yeah, I'm hoping to take some ASA courses on my three week break from school. Vb seems like a great place to learn! Lots of sheltered water in the bay/inlets and plenty of open ocean when I get advanced enough to make my way that direction.

Re: Hello All!

If you are wanting to do ASA courses, may I suggest Sailtime over at Willoughby...Captain Lilly and John are wonderful, and you will get quickly networked with many others that way too, racing and cruising both!

Re: Hello All!

Awesome! I definitely understand the importance of networking, especially here in the maritime world. I will be contacting sailtime shortly. Mind if I let them know you referred me?

Re: Hello All!

absolutely please do tell them! They have a fb page too, if you search sailtime virginia beach, another way to see if anyone looking for crew, can often get on a boat!

Re: Hello All!

Welcome aboard! I've been looking for a sail boat since joining this forum in 2009 and just got one in Key West which I hope to move to Stuart, Florida. I've enjoyed this group as they are very helpful. If you ever get in Florida (sail) or Michigan (power boat) give a call. Huey2
