Hello all

Just dropped in to say Hi ,not had a chance to look round yet but from the little I've seen it looks like an OK place.
I am based in the UK and live on a 60 foot narrow boat with my wife and two dogs.

Re: Hello all

Well the boat is our home but yes we do cruise her though we do spend the winter tucked in our home berth in a marina. Based in the Fens of Cambridgeshire

Re: Hello all

Hmm...
I had to look up just what and where the Fens of Cambridgeshire are.
Seems they're about halfway between where I was born (Lincoln) and where I once used to work (Colchester). Although I'm a long, long way distant from there now.
Can I conjecture your boat is narrow because it's used primarily (entirely?) in canals or whatever waterway structures they have there? And presumably shallow draft for similar reason. And can I suppose it's not a good boat for the open sea?
Do the fens have any navigable connection to the sea? Are there many boats/people there with a similar lifestyle to yours? It all sounds interesting.

Re: Hello all

Well yes the boat though 60 feet long is only 6' 10" wide, this enables her to pass through narrow locks which are a nominal 7' 2". And that means in fact it is unsuitable foe the sea.
We can cross the Wash as quite a few NBs do it's a long trip and means a spell drying out but it is a quick way to get from the Cambridgeshire Fens to the port of Boston in Lincolnshire. To make a trip such as this foes mean waiting for the right weather window there have been NBs that have crossed the English Channel and one looney who did this took his boat the length of France to the Med.
The same guy had his NB shipped to the States and travelled down the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway from Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico.
Check out his book...Narrow Dog to Indian River. The narrow dog is in fact his dog, a whippet a very skinny breed. Like a small greyhound
There are many people living on boats such as ours, in fact the canals in and around London are heaving with boats because rents for property in London are way, way above the average Joe's income so they take to the water as a cheaper alternative.

Re: Hello all

Welcome to the CF! I have ambitions to both do a motorcycle and narrow boat tour of Great Britain one summer, so I look forward to reading any posts you make on the subject!
