Hello

Thought I should finally say "hello" and thank you. Thank you to all who post to share their knowledge, it is appreciated by those of us who know very little. Would also like to thank those that post their opinions as they sometimes make interesting reading while drinking my coffee and starting my day.

Still in the dreaming stage as I do not yet own a boat. Have one more child to get thru school and then the wife and I can make different choices. Plan is to take classes next year and then buy a sailboat on Lake Michigan to learn with. We shall see how much the three Fates laugh at my plan.

It has been a bit, so could someone start a post on how of hide a weapon on the boat? Absolutely love the posts that topic brings out. No, I don't plan to hide a weapon.

@GordMay....thank you for the "In the News" and "This Day in History". Generally not about sailing but they do start the day well.

Cheers
Dave

Re: Hello

Hiding a gun has been done. Spend a minute using the search functions and I'm sure it will turn up.

But curious, why would one want specific details on how to do something that he/she had no intention of doing?

I think it's called "stirring the pot"...

Didn't say it but strongly suspect it.

Re: Hello

Apologies, I enjoy the reading of the posts in those threads, as stated. It has been done multiple times, as pointed out soon after each thread starts, but they are always enjoyable threads to read. No intention of stirring any pots.

Hi Dave. Maybe you missed a few of the gun threads but they frequently turn into arguments, anger and insults. Quite a few have been closed by moderators and if I recall at least one member banned. Hence the suggestion that a question about hiding guns might be an attempt to start something.

The situation got so common and predictable it has become a standing joke on the forum. Maybe safer to start a discussion about anchors.

Re: Hello

Regardless of what you may want to hide... it is a legitmate question and "How to". Every boat owner making long passages or sailing into unknown waters should probably have a place or three for hiding things - cash, documents, "weapons" etc.

And the answer totally depends on the type of boat you have.

Re: Hello

On a large aluminum boat we once visited on, there was a built in safe in a locker on the stbd. side. Big enough for a pistol and quite a lot of large denomination bills. I was astonished that we were shown it. It was slyly placed, so that it would be unlikely to spot it if you didn't already know where it was.

We also visited aboard a boat that had a rifle locker, in the saloon, in full view.

So, yes, some people do those things. I think it is remarkably indiscreet to share where you keep your secret fund stash, but I suspect many more boats have them than talk about it.

Ann

On Edit: The year we came across the pond, there was a German couple on a boat built in the US, that let it out that he had $3,000 in US dollars aboard his boat. Funny, next time we saw him he said the money went missing when he and his good lady were out at dinner one night.

I'm up for the ground tackle discussion, having just had occasion to purchase a 44-lb Delta, 100 feet of chain and 150 feet of rode...

Ann-
You are spot on and in hindsight I won't even talk about places on my boat that I wouldn't use as a stash location. But thinking about this has given me two new places on my boat to investigate as possible hideaways!!! :-)

Oh no. A Delta. You're going to drag for sure, wreck your boat and kill a couple dozen innocent bystanders in the harbor.
