Hi there!
I'll try my best to explain my thoughts about sailing and why I started seriously thinking about it.
My background has been fishing off small craft while growing up. My
family went out just about every weekend. Fishing is awesome--fun sport and food--and as I am born and raised in southern
California, just a few miles from the beach, it was very easy to go fishing.
A couple of years ago I really thought what would excite me would be fishing boats--heavy-duty fishing vessels--and the desire to really get to know the giant tunas. I thought therein was a perfect balance between getting to the
water and easily returning to land.
What next happened seems, to me, a kind of progression, albeit in my mind. I kept thinking about sailboats. I wondered why people go sailing--it seems a lot of
work and mental agility and focus--and there are risks involved. Slowly, my focus became more ravenous than wanting to do battle with a giant
fish; I got hungry to know more about the home the tuna lives in. I want to know the ocean and its inhabitants in a more immersive way. Of course these thoughts morphed into the other bonuses that come with the watery territory, and the challenge from a sport perspective.
If I could narrow my aspirations down by defining them, I'll try now:
I want to see the ocean in its different states.
I want to
fish, of course, and eat them, too. I'm getting pretty hooked on the idea of spear fishing--I'd like to learn that.
I want to see what a whale's eye looks like, looking at me, if it can be seen safely. I wish I could touch a sea turtle.
I don't want to be railmeat unless I'm in a race--and
racing even for a little fun would be great--but I really want to understand the mechanics and technical side of sailing and working with the actual
equipment, hands on.
I don't care if I get seasick. When I was very small I did that.
I want to see the earth from a different vantage point. I want to see what's going on besides just being relegated to other people's videos.
I want to do something great in my life. I don't want to wake up another ten years later wondering where did the days go.
Life can be so short, it seems. And before you know it, you've spent your life in dreams.--Rita Evelyn Yanez
I'm awake now. Maybe older--definitely wiser. I want to have some FUN!
