[young 78]

hi, i been reading the site for a while and signed up a few weeks back.

my boat is a young 78 built by my dad and launched in 1985. its been handed down to me (2 years ago now) to look after it and tidy her up a bit, so that means a lot of everdure into any exposed bits of wood i come across and lots and lots of fresh paint.
im mostly ontop of it all from the waterline up and the next big job is antifoul.

i was planning to put her up on the slip and do it there but being a trailer sailer i decided to build a trailer instead so i can also use it to take her on various trips around Australia ( whitsundays will be my first )
she has spent all of her life in the water so being on a trailer will be a new experience.

Jim Young was a great designer and whilst the 78 is not a race boat - I enjoyed one twilight race on one when we went just fine. Hope you enjoy your sailing - looks like you are off to a super start with dad passing on the boat.

Welcome aboard you lucky man.

How nice it must be to have this lovely yacht handed down to you, and
it was built by your dad.

When I was a boy, 12yrs, I used to work with my grandfather in his garage. He was into woodwork, and down the side lent a long piece of bent timber. This was to be the main ridge down the middle of a wooden boat. Not sure what it's called it had notches all the way along. I guess he had dreams of building his own boat. I can only imagine how it would feel if he ever built it and then had it handed down to me. The piece of timber never moved as he lost the energy to continue I guess, age caught up with him.

You boat looks great sitting right up on the shore. You can get out for a stroll them back in to sail away.

Thats a sad kind of tale about your granfathers inability to finish that wooden dinghy project - but who knows - maybe something better took over?
As it happens - the Jim Young 78 above is also made of wood - plywood sheets screwed and glued together. Most were home built from kits and or plans sent out from NZ.
Maybe a project for you to consider - and see through to the end?
