Good Bluewater Boat?

Hi,
I am planning on some serious sailing..

I have been lurking here for a while, and am not going to touch the sensitive topic of guns....



I am looking at an older used boat...(25 years) it needs some work to get masts up but I think I can get a good deal, and with a little work I could have a great sailboat. She is Not a Cat, but a nice monohull, so it should be steady in storms. Full Keel design. Steel, not ferro. She has a watermaker on board, and seems to have been maintained well.

I look forward to getting your (most able) opinion.

The boat is on an auction site, and I would appreciate if no one here tries to steal her from me..

She is based in the UK presently, and I did read the posts that anyone can give a bill of sale (even for the ark royal) so I look forward to your advice to insure a safe transaction.

IMO it all depends if it comes with Harriers on board or not..

Welcome aboard Ezzy, They only problem with that boat will be the draft.You will never get a nice place to anchor in the Bahamas.

I only have one harrierHarrier (dog) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and he is a good sea dog. (pict below) I know he needs a place to run about, but I think the deck should give ample room.
He is a bit of a loaner, and having multiple harriers would not make him happy....

But the boat looks like a steel, eh?

Is that a real problem? I could anchor outside, and then dink it in, no? I am sure I can have a dink or two that will fit on this boat...

Especially, as I plan on singlehanding..... so I should not be so cramped.

Seems a bit young for disposal. What's the minimum bid? Have you got a marina and slip picked out?

Edit: That is one handsome pooch. I think I'd rather have him than the boat.

In seriousness, There is no minimum.... and yea.. in my opinion the situation is tragic... but... I hear that 2M GPB could get you the whole vessel....., as that is what her sister the invincible sold for....HMS Invincible aircraft carrier leaves Portsmouth for Turkish scrapyard | Mail Online

I cannot agree with you more the boat is a real ste(a)el and Harrier can run about,yet as Mark1977 said Bahamas will probably a no go zone draft wise...perhaps Falklands?(pun intended)? Although i hear Africa is soon becoming a popular cruising grounds for that kind of boats.

You will need to focus on this before you make your purchase :

SA/D Ratio which is the sail area/displacement ratio. We also wish to know when you will purchase so as to get in before the price of Dacron hits the roof.

Are you aiming for a sloop or cutter rig set up? I would not recommend a ketch rig as they are difficult to singlehand and taking the lines aft might prove a bit of a headache. With an out of work linesman moonlighting for you though you might have a chance.

Talking about esthetics you may want to think rethink the colorscheme. And personally I don't go for large pilothouses .

Motion Comfort ratio : You might want to test this before purchase .

But truth be told one outstanding advantage that beats all other boats on your list :
It is just perfect for cruising the coast of Somalia. Can one say Na nah nana nah on VHF ???

I don't want to get to invested in my dreams for the boat, and giving away all my good ideas before I win in... but... do you think a teak deck would be good? or should I just glass and paint....?

Hmmm, not sure. The deforestation needed would probably have an impact on global weather and wind strengths. I would recommend 10 oz Dacron in this case and definitely advise us before purchase.

Glass and paint: Nooo .Think about reflected heat !!! Global warming !
Thinking about it further though I see no need for non slip decks on this boat. Your best method of propulsion will be imitating Tarzan and swing from cable vines suspended from a "lifeline" at 8 or 9 ft height. Takes care of hanging out the washing too.
