Glad to now be aboard.

I'm new to sailing and retirement. One excites while the other frightens me. It's my hope, that Sailing will help with the transition. I'm looking forward to the next wave!

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. What are your concerns. Looks like you are on the right track. #1 retire, #2 sail. Thanks for your service. Quite a few retired military here. Me included.
kind regards,

Good for you. I learned to sail starting at age 62, moved aboard just before my 65th birthday and don't regret a day of it.

Don't be frightened of sailing. Get some basic lessons, then start practicing. Sail on every kind of boat you can. Joining a sailing club will hook you up with more experienced sailors, most of whom would love to take you out sailing -- truly.

And get a copy of SAILING FOR DUMMIES. I think it's a terrific book for beginning sailors.

Re: Glad to now be aboard.

Sailing is the easy part.

Retirement will be the challenge. You will make a better transition into retirement if you have a positive focus around which you can organize your life. Sailing is an awesome focus.

Keep on keeping on.

Hello and welcome. You will soon find out that prior to retirement, you can't figure out how you got everything done. You won't be bored for lack for something to do. Time and practice will build your confidence and skills and the fear will go away, but the occasional anxiety is all part of the adventure. Good luck and enjoy.

Re: Glad to now be aboard.

i can only tell what worked for us -- we did not take up sailing until dec 2000 when we took some lessons from a school in charlottes harbor fla - we got a boat in 2003 and i retired a couple of years after that - we have been out about 6 years and have never been busier - we sailed the east coast of the usa 3 times the bahamas 2 times and decided we wanted more - so we set off to mexico and headed south and ended up in colombia - we still wanted more so we sailed across the jamaica and then down the island chain to trinidad then back up and wanted more - so on may 1 of this year we headed across the atlantic and are currently exploring the azores and will head to the mainland soon (God willing) -
not sure of your boat but we sail a 40' jeanneau - any thing you need or questions to ask just pm us - if we have internet we will answer
take care and good luck - it is not that difficult once you get started - the hard part is always the 1st step

just our opinion and what works for us

Thanks to all. I will be implementing the suggestions soon. It's hard to pace yourself when the hourglass is nearly empty.

Same here, you're a man after my own heart.(did i say that right ?)

Haven't got a boat yet, but I'm taking sailing lessons during the day & shopping on the web at night.

Wishing fair winds from Texas.
