Giving up doing it alone...
On orders from the war office I have joined the forum... apparently I don't know everything and need to have a place where I can talk to like minded folks... because I have no friends...
I used to work in the marine industry 30 years ago, where I vowed never to buy a boat... only suckers with money to burn do that!
After leaving the marine industry, for the aviation industry, I found something more expensive than boating... only after I learned to fly!
Fast forward 25 years and I bought a boat, not a weekend trailer boat but a 34ft 6 ton timber motor cruiser built in 1975... which now has a couple of problems I need to fix...
This led us (the war office and I) to consider a change to a sailing boat with the cost of diesel becoming ever more expensive
So... apart from hopefully meeting some great people to help with our current troubles, we are investigating when/how/what with regards to getting our sailing boat... starting with taking lessons in not to distant future, whilst in the meantime smarting up the wooden wonder to help pay for the windy wonder!
Looking forward to chatting with those more knowledgable than I

The addiction has taken hold !
Everyone knows B.O.A.T. means "bring out another thousand"
Just remember over 40' it's spelled "B.O.A.T.T."

Hi Its-Bux. Welcome here. Welcome to the reality of boat ownership: trouble, sometimes spelled as Trouble, and even as TROUBLE.
You have worked in the marine industry and your knowledge might trump many here. I am this week in Freo, happy to be contacted.

Inflation has made $1000 into chump change for boats, it's been replaced by "Bend Over And Take."

In addition to the structure of lessons, maybe you and the war office can hang out with some sailors, and crew for them. The challenges of the sea are the same, but the methods of dealing with it are a lot different, and you'll learn a lot by the modeling of the situation.
Enjoy, welcome aboard CF, and for most searches, use the CF Custom Google search under the Search button.

Ahr- don't worry Bux. You've got it beat. You already know that fiscally it's a mug's game, so no worries there.
Being a stink-potter, you've got the navigation beet. And the ship's husbandry. So no worries there.
As for handling a rag waver, there is nothing to it. I could teach you the basics in a weekend. From there on, it'd be up to you whether to spend the rest of your life putting the polish on it :-)
Cheers!

Thanks Hank , the tub is in Freo, I'm a little closer to the hills and only just returned from Pemberton tonight. I won't get to the tub (and Freo) until next week when Mrs B heads back to work... How often are you in Freo?

Thanks Anne, I hope to touch base with the local club, I hadn't thought of crewing... not sure I'd be up for embarrassing myself so soon after deciding to change to sailing.. but certainly something I'll keep in mind once I get used to rope burns!

Many sailors here have suggested the cost of rigging and sails can be prodigious, too. Some of the posts on that have made diesel seem cheap by comparison.
And then sailing often needs a whole bunch of work to get from Point A to Point B.
And living in a cave.
(All said with greatest respect to our fellow mariners.)
Trawlerforum.com is a sister site and you might find it useful for ideas and help on "fixing stuff." Or maybe even decreasing your fuel consumption.

Re: Giving up doing it alone...
If it makes you feel better, I did the recent Sydney to Hobart and the return for a total of 20L of diesel.
About 1300 nm.
That included running the engine to charge the batteries.
I accept that’s not a typical usage!
