G'day from Coffs Harbour Australia
Hi All! Absolute newbie to Yachts and the Cruising life, I am reading as much as I can, visiting Marina's and docks, talking to as many yachties as I can! I am in the market for a Yacht and am currently keen on a Samson 48' Ferro Ketch! My "bitch" ( A very well known Stumpy tailed Aust' cattle dog!!) and I wish to permanently live aboard. Once we get the handling of a cruising sail boat, then we will broaden our horizons & start another life adventure. I am open to any sound, good advice!
Although new to the sailing scene, we are not new to the water, I served 20 years in the R.A.N. on various vessels before spending 16 years in 'O' class Submarines (DBF) PTSD is my enemy now :-( Hopefully I don't play submarines with whatever sailing boat I end up with!! I skippered many power boats from 10' to 150' and onboard a good seaworthy vessel, I would be confident in most sea's.
My bitch, Bundy, has rode a jetski (with me!!) from Phillip Island (Victoria) to Cairns (far Nth Qld) and has travelled over 800,000Klm's sitting on the tank of various motorcycles. (all for charity I might add!). So being able to actually stretch her legs at sea will be something different for her!!
I am so keen to read and talk to those that have cruised the coast or blue water and absorb their knowledge. When the day comes that I can let go the last line and head out to sea to wherever, will be the day I am at my happiest. :-)
Sorry for the ramblings, but as Big Kev' used to say: "I'm Excited"
Cheers,
Tex.

Hi. If you are not already then a great way to get a feel for cruising and living aboard is to follow some of the blogs that some liveabords update whilst they cruise. We still follow many after four years living aboard for inspiration and ideas.

Howdy Tex! And here's a hearty Welcome Aboard CF from Texas!
I enjoyed reading your introduction, and it sounds like you are a real adventurer with your travels.
I have to ask: How did you get the nickname "Tex?"
Good luck on your sailing adventures and have fun!
Steady

A Few of my Favorite Tips for New Members to this Forum:
Since you are new to this forum, let me mention a few things you might miss but that could help you more enjoy your time here:
There is a free Cruiser's Wiki associated with this forum.
There is a LOT of free content in that wiki. Including "cruising guides."
There are also some "social groups" that are more focused on special interests, and as I saw, they can be fun for their members. I am not a member of those groups, but you should be able to find them if you do some exploring of the forum website, look for "groups."

Looking for Quick Answers?
This is the best and fastest method I have found to the answers I seek here.
Since you are relatively new to the forum, here is my favorite friendly forum search tip: Look at the green menu bar on the forum pages for the drop down "Search" menu. Click on that to drop down a list of search functions. From that drop down menu select the GOOGLE CUSTOM search feature (the second box down) and then enter several different descriptive terms for your topic of interest. That will do a Custom google search of ONLY this site and it is likely to find answers to your questions or results for you. Note: this is different from using the regular forum search box or field. Also note, this is NOT found if you use the CF app. It IS found if you use a web browser such as Safari, etc.

Re: G'day from Coffs Harbour Australia
G'day Steady, Thanks for the tips. My nick name was passed down to me from my uncle who is more like a brother to me! Had it all my life, even when I joined the Navy, my nick name stuck, mind you, I was called many other names, but we won't go there!!!
I've been to Victoria and some Canyon (the name escapes me atm) in Texas back in '92. Mate, if you ever find yourself heading for Oz, let me know, always a room here. Am off to Qld today to look at a Roberts 44, fingers crossed this is the boat for me. Needs some work, (Interior is 90%, wiring needs doing etc) right up my alley. Will let you know how I go, when I'm back in a couple of days!!
Cheers, Tex.

Love Coffs Harbour......golf, surfing and marlin fishing were outstanding. One of my best mates lives there....Who bent the big banana?
Good luck with the potential new boat!
