Dreaming about Retiring on a Live-aboard

Hello All.... I am 54, Divorced, with kids off and doing their own thing. I am looking at 13 more years until I start collecting my hard earned savings. fortunately, I have a flexible way to earn my keep. I'd like to purchase a comfortable Cruiser and live aboard until I am ready for my first voyage. The key is Broad Band Internet. I need a reliable 10 - 15 MB to keep my customers (and the Boss) happy. What challenges and expenses can I expect in that column ?

Hoping to meet some helpful and Honest folks here.

Thanks !

Find a marina that will let you have a cable modem, or find one that you can give someone on land free internet and set up a wireless modem and you share.
Forget the marina supplying it, it's not going to happen reliably. I too have heard of marinas that have true high speed internet, just haven't found one yet, it may be in some foreign land?

Welcome to CF!
10-15MB/s is in well within the abilities of LTE on Cellular... how many MB you go through in a month?

Re: Dreaming about Retiring on a Live-aboard

Plenty of marinas are able to provide a wired connection. You'll find which providers are already serving liveaboards with a quick wifi scan.

It's always tedious getting the providers to actually gove you a connection. A marina is a foreign concept to most call center and connection techs. Be persistent.

I work in tech and often from the boat. We've recently relocated from San Francisco to Seattle so havent yet convinced our service provider to find a tech who isn't dumber than a bag of rocks. Have been tethering to my TMobile phone burning through 20 GB / month. Some Netflix, some YouTube and the rest is work.

Re: Dreaming about Retiring on a Live-aboard

Here's a thread for you: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...le-170877.html

As a64pilot said, marina with broadband is key. I easily use 5GB per day for work. LTE is only economical for short periods. Marinas in the area we are moving to have Comcast for residential prices. $75 per month gets you unlimited 50mbps at your slip. Marina wifi is very iffy.

Cheers, RickG
