Depth transducer

Hello,all.
Am new to forum and would have to be considered new(3+) years to sailing.
Am partner in a sweet 1979 Endeavour 32.
Still adding needed fittings & refits.
With the full keel on boat am trying hard for good advice on type and location for depth transducer. Any experience and thoughts welcome. Thanks.

Hi Boudreau and welcome to the forum.

My first question, did the boat not have a depth transducer installed somewhere before? If so I would use the same location. I replaced the transducer in my Pearson and was even able to use the same mounting.

If no hole from a previous transducer maybe the PO used one that shot through the hull. That works quite well if done correctly with some loss of max depth range. I hear that it may not work as well if at all with a cored hull but not sure about that.

Best location is forward end of the hull which puts the transducer in less turbulent water and gives more stable readings. Also may give you about a half second warning of a shallow spot just before the keel goes BUMP. Try to mount the transducer so it sits as close to horizontal as possible.

On my boat it is mounted on the center-line, below the stem and just ahead of the leading edge of the keel.

By the way, with a handle like Boudreau shouldn't you be in south LA instead of GA?

Welcome aboard! My buddy's boat has it amidships and about a foot away from the keel. I have a transducer mounted in clay on the inside of the hull in roughly the same location and it seems to work fine too. But I bet one was already mounted somewhere in there. Good luck!

Howdy! If you don't go the in-hull route, you might look for a transducer that has a built-in 'tilt' that can mount flush with the hull and cancel out the deadrise. Lots of folks have in-hulls but beware that if your hull is too thick, lower down near the keel join especially, the inhull transducers can be spotty. You need a clean, relatively thin, non-cored hull for them to work.
