Dan in California

Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster

I'm 54 now, have been sailing since I was about 6. Have always been happy to be on a boat. Grew up sailing on lake superior. Sailed in the San Francisco bay most of my adult life. Moved to Ventura (Southern California) in 2017 and started living aboard there. Have lived aboard ever since -- first in a 1977 Cal 34, now in a 1998 Beneteau 461.
I LOVE living aboard. I'm right next to a gorgeous beach and the weather is perfect most of the time. Unlike many of my neighbors, I take my boat out regularly for day sails and for one to five day trips to the local islands and other spots around So. Cal.
I have a 21-year-old son who is profoundly physically and developmentally disabled and deaf. He's the reason I moved to Ventura - to be close to him when he moved into a group home there. I also have a girlfriend / partner who has 2 teenaged kids. We don't live together but she will move onto the boat when her kids move out of the house.
My partner and I are planning to start cruising full time in 2025 after her kids are both out of the house. Current plan is to spend a year getting our bearings in the Gulf of California, then French Polynesia, then figure out the best way to get from there to the Caribbean.

Re: Dan in California

G'Day Dan and welcome aboard CF.

Copy about the plans... but don't be surprised if they work out in some different manner!

Ann and I started out in SFB, spent a longish time in the SOC and pressed on to French Polynesia eventually. From that point of view, the rest of the south Pacific looked a lot nicer and a lot more accessible than the Caribe (at least to us) and here we are in Tasmania, some 30 odd years later.

No matter which way you go, you'll have adventures and a hell of a good time. It's a great life, so enjoy!

Jim

Welcome aboard Dan! I'm just down the beach from you. Let me know when you head out to the islands, I'll try to catch up with you out there!
