Considering cruising around Greece

Hi all,
It's really great to find a forum so full of information. I don't have a boat and haven't done any cruising except a few weeks on the English canals. I used to sail dinghies and enjoyed that. It's always been my dream to spend ages sailing around the Greek Islands, I love the food, the music and speak the language a little and have visited quite a few islands on holidays of various sorts. So, now my wife and I are retired we've decided to find out more, what costs are involved and what skills we need to learn, to see if we can do it.
Hopefully much help will be found here.
Cheers Marty Mosic

Re: Considering cruising around Greece

Greece is not expensive .

Its natural geography has many ports and anchorages

Greece is an excellent choice

In Europe you really only have Greece and Croatia ...plus the Baltic Sea if you only need a six month season

The western Mediterranean is pretty much unusable from a geography , cost point of view

Re: Considering cruising around Greece

Thank you for your reassuring information. I realise we have a long learning journey to go on before getting our boat in Greece, we have to learn skippering and how to purchase a decent boat, so it is good to know from someone with experience that are putting our efforts into something attainable and affordable.

You might like to watch Sailing ABC on You Tube, they are also members on here doing what you are planning.

Sadly the height of the season (Jul - Aug) is probably too hot for us, so cooler waters for us.

I mostly agree with this - Greece is perfect. But certainly many people do cruise the Western Med on a budget. It's just not as much fun (IMO). Add in Turkey also.

Re: Considering cruising around Greece

Why not start by chartering to get an idea if you like it? We’ve chartered a couple times from Kefalonia - the Ionian is as gentle an into to Greek sailing as you could wish for. If you’re lacking confidence join a flotilla to get started, and Greece is true perfect place to buy a yacht if you decide it’s what you want.

Basically this, but I like Turkey also very much for cruising. The Turkish Aegean is an easier proposition than the Greek in the summer months.

Re: Considering cruising around Greece

Greece is nice and trouble free if mostly basic.

Consider doing one charter there to see if you like.
