Our route:
I think nothing has changed more than this portion of the cruising plan.
Our original route was
San Francisco to
Hawaii November - April then
South Pacific may- November getting us into
Australia in November before the start of the
South Pacific cyclone season. A year to cross the pacific. Then on through Southeast
Asia, through the Suez
Canal and then the
Mediterranean for as long as we want till we cross the Atlantic back to the states.
After being in Hawaii for a month, having visited
Thailand and determined that cruising there would be less fun than we envisioned (think third world, bugs, thieves, etc). We made the decision to stay in Hawaii for a year. Hawaii is truly paradise like no other, there is nothing deadly on the island. No malaria or dengue fever or snakes or spiders etc. the people are awesome, the beaches unreal and it's got its own culture even though it's still America and everything works.
Are we giant wusses for making one long
passage and then holding up at the first nice place we get to? Probably but who cares, this place is truly a paradise. And the slip location is best I've ever had. Life is just perfect here. Let's stay and start
family. But wait... The slip we are in is only good for 4 months? We have to move our
boat to the middle of no where? Ok, let's keep going.
Alright so we gonna continue sailing around the world. What we gonna do about pirates? The whole south east
Asia,
Indonesia,
Malaysia,
Thailand,
India by
boat sounds pretty rough too. It's not the sailing but the time, heat, disease, thieves and really dirty places with dirty scary people.
So here's the new plan. We sail to
Australia doing the entire South Pacific, paradise to paradise then have the boat shipped to the
Mediterranean. I think its like $1k per foot to ship it. $41 is approx what it would cost to sail the whole way with
fuel,
food,
taxes, and wear and tear. Plus it would save a year and avoid the nastiest
parts of the world. So that's the plan.
Two weeks later... Just heard from the
shipping company. Cost is $82,000 to ship the boat. Bummer. Need a new plan. How about we sail the southern
Indian Ocean. Around the cape of good hope? We won't be able to go to the Mediterranean but there are some nice islands like the
Maldives and
Seychelles. Ok... So that's the plan now.
Give me two weeks and we'll have a new plan. Are Somali pirates really that scary?
