Hi all! I'm Chris, retired from the USN and then banking. Just completed ASA 101, we have a few free charters then on to 103,104. We are thinking about living aboard but not sure yet. We will see how it goes. We live near (( 5 minutes ) Kemah, TX.

Welcome. I'd be love to hear about how you liked your charter company and 101 school. I am interested in coming down to the Kemah area and sailing, but need to find a good place to charter.

Re: Chris and Dora new sailors

Hi. We used the Bay Area Sailing School in Kemah, TX. We were pleased with the 101 class. It was a two day course with a test at the end of day two. About half of the class was on the water, sailing. The boat was a 22 ft. Tiller sloop. We took the course during the week and paid less that $300 each. We were the only students in the class and chose this for the more individual attention. There is another school that uses a 40.1 dual wheel sloop in the same marina, not sure what they charge.

Re: Chris and Dora new sailors

Hi Chris. Welcome from someone who mostly lurks. I have friends that did 101 at Bay Area sailing and they really enjoyed it. We have it in our sights but haven’t managed to schedule it yet as I’m trying to finish my late-in-life bachelors degree. Time is tight and since we’re paying cash for school, money is too.
In the meantime, we’re self-teaching on sunfish out of Seabrook Sailing Club and have been on a few social sails and one informal class with TASS (TX Assn of Social Sailors.)
We’re on our third season and still beginners. Maybe if we were in Kemah and not Sugar Land it would be a different story [emoji848]

Re: Chris and Dora new sailors

Welcome.

I would suggest updating your profile with your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.
