Cheers!

After a few years or lurking, learning, and despite the ratio of bullying to kindness I've decided to join your helpful forum. Yes, the kindness seems to outweigh the bullying. Slightly.

I'm Chris. Former aquatic ecologist and brewery owner. Now building a real estate portfolio to facilitate my wife, an MD, to join me in abandoning the rat race.

I'm not sure where the sailing thing came from, as neither of us has a history with boats. But like many folks, we think a lot about what it would be like to be liveaboards. We are on a two year plan when my third daughter graduates high school and we might be ready financially for my wife to stop earning a W2 income (and still survive). I'm 50, she's 41. Our youngest daughter is 6. Over the next two years we will decide how we will live out the next phase of our lives.

Anyway, two years out I'm ready to start asking a few questions specific to sailing and liveaboarding, so figured I'd sign up and interact however I can. Thank you for the opportunity.

Chris

Re: Cheers!

I’d be wary of immersing myself in the lifestyle having no “history” with boats. I’d advise you to crew or charter to get a feel for sailing and start small to ensure your life altering decision fits your dreams and aspirations. It is not for everyone…..hence marinas full of rarely used declining assets.

Re: Cheers!

Yeah I've read posts like this. I also came into the worlds of bluegrass and motorcycles having not 'grown up in them'. I'm sure your comments are intended to be entirely helpful, but I assure you they are not. Thanks for posting, anyway.

Re: Cheers!

Welcome to CF!
I joined with a 5 year plan, and no real sailing experience. We bought a cheap lake boat to practice locally, and did a couple charters to experience bigger boats and ocean environment. It worked well for us and we were ready once our youngest graduated high school.(the reason for our 5 year plan)
My only recomendation is to sail. In any way possible, and on as many boats as possible. It's an exciting process, and was a very fun time for us. Enjoy it!

Re: Cheers!

Thanks Chris Mac!

I'm going to post my first 'question' in another forum here, but you pretty much nailed it.

We live in the mountains, but there is a small sailing community at the local reservoirs. An 24' day sailor came up for sale with a slip and we are thinking about getting it just to practice and have fun while we wait.

Chris
The great thing about sailing a land locked area as practice(besides being able to sail) is they hold their value. In a couple years if and when you are ready to move aboard, it should be worth about the same as you bought it for.
Dock fees and improvements are sunk costs of course. But that again is just practice for being live aboard.
Have fun!
