Charleston Here We Come

Hi folks,

I've been a member and reader for a long time. Been quietly obsessed wtih sailing for even longer, though I haven't been on the water much. I've so much enjoyed reading this forum, learned a lot, laughed a lot, the whole thing.

The reason I am posting now is that as of 3 weeks from now, my wife and I will be leaving Colorado and heading to South Carolina, where I will be starting an ICU job, and we will begin our search for a boat. We plan on a couple months of searching, looking, and walk arounds before buying, and then moving on to the boat and making a semi-permanent home around Charleston!

This has been a dream of mine for a long time, and my wife has caught the bug as well. I look forward to becoming a more avid contributor to the forum, seeking advice, and asking all the stupid questions all over again!

I thank you all for your wisdom and experience, and know that I appreciate the chance to learn from everyone.

Feel free to offer advice and ask questions.

Re: Charleston here we come

I'm in Charleston now gearing up for my big trip south next season. If I haven't taken my sails off for the winter before you guys get here, and work permits, I'd be happy to show you guys around the harbor on my 27 if you like

Are you planning on living in the Marina or on the hook? I'd keep an eye on the north carolina craigslist. one of my buddies just bought his boat, so I've been vicariously looking at boat porn for about a year now and some real cherries have come across the listings in that area. That's where he ended up buying his.

Re: Charleston here we come

Hey great man! Thanks for the offer. We'd love to take you up on that. I'll shoot you a PM once we are in town and settled a little, we won't be in town til after the 17th of October.

Once we find/buy a boat we're planning on a marina, preferrably close to downtown as I'm newly employed at MUSC.

Thanks for the tip on NC, been looking mostly in SC just because of proximity and my own lack of experience. But I will definitly take a look.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Courses can't hurt if you haven't already had one or two. It really lets you know if you'll like the actual sailing part of it.

Thanks SkiprJohn,

I have in fact had a few personal "lessons" and will be looking for some ASA classes once we get there. Hard to find good sailing instruction in the CO mountains (though not impossible. Nautulis sailing in Crested Butte comes to mind).

Are you offering?

If you can make it out here we've got a fleet of Sunfish.

Re: Charleston Here We Come

Hey Jdubbery welcome, my wife and I just purchased a 50' Beneteau and are headed south to Charleston as we speak. Where in Colorado are you? We have a place in Keystone, and plan on spending the mud seasons aboard our new baby and ski and summer in the hills. If your thinking of a marina in Charleston get ready for sticker shock, marinas are pretty spendy especially downtown. If you get a boat with a stick less than I think 55' the harborage at Ashely marina is relatively affordable. Ours is 65' so no go looks like we will be on the hook, can't quite stomach the $20 to $30/ft at downtown marina. Anyways we should be there early November so shoot me a pm and feel free to stop by and talk shop.

Cheers Will

Re: Charleston Here We Come

That's a fact, marinas here are crazy expensive. I was going to live aboard until I got down here and found out an apartment was cheaper than a slip. The Cooper river marina is reasonable, but it's a little ways up the river.

What an awesome city. Such a change from Colorado. I think I'm gonna like it here. Looking forward to getting to know the sailing community out here.
