Carbon fiber mast

Hi I’m new to the forum, but looking forward to all the wisdom available. I have a 1987 Freedom 30 that has a carbon fiber mast with some hairline cracks that go around horizontally. Is this common for these masts of this age or is it something I should be concerned about?
Thanks, FreeAir

Re: Carbon fiber mast

Yes, very common. The outer layer is a wrap of fiberglass to provide hoop strength. The structural engineer of most of the Freedom masts, who is a member here, Eric Spoonberg, has written an article about this and how to repair it. Google it, it is available on the internet net. It might also be at his website where you will find a lot of interesting articles about freestanding rigs.

Thanks for your reply. I haven’t been able to download the from the site that had Mr Spoonberg’s article, but will try again on a different device. Thanks
