Capt. Jim Grigg USCG Sailing Endorsement achieved

Last year, Master Captain. This year, Sailing Endorsement. A Sailing Endorsement may be added onto a Master Near Coastal License by documenting at least 360 days on a sailing or auxiliary sailing vessel. This USCG-approved course is designed to fulfill the training and testing requirements for an Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement to be added onto any 25/50 or 100 Ton Master or Mate License.

Congrats on getting the Cert. Remember, if you haven't already done so, you still need to apply to the CG for an "Increase in Scope" as I recall and send them the Cert. If you already submitted enough sailing sea service on your initial application they will still have that on record. When approved they'll send you a sticky label to put on the next page of your credential book. The certificate itself does not add the endorsement to your licence.

Re: Capt. Jim Grigg USCG Sailing Endorsement achieved

Jim,

Congratulations! It is probably worth mentioning for those that intend to sit for a USCG license that you don't need to already have a license in order to add the Auxiliary Sail endorsement. If your qualifying sea service for your initial USCG license was on a sailboat, you can just add Auxiliary Sail as a requested endorsement on your initial application to USCG. Then when you sit for your exam, it will include one additional module for auxiliary sail and your initial credential will include this endorsement.

There is not a requirement for any training - just the sea time (360 days on sail or auxiliary sail) and the test.

And this may be pendantic, but "master captain" is mixing two different constructs. Here is an interesting article that gets into the etymology of those terms.

Ha! Im glad you posted the pendantic bit before me! (Sometimes it pays to read the thread) The common misuse of "Master Captain" is one of my pet peeves too!
