Can someone help ?

I'm new to the forum and have joined in hopes someone can help me identify what I think are Barlow winches. My hussband purchased these about 8 years ago because he was building a 32' sloop. During the build, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and has deteriorated. I am now clearing out the tools, equipment etc. and have no idea if any of this is worth anything. I do not really want to take it to the scrap yard because it was part of his dream ... Can someone tell me what exactly this is and is it worth anything. I can post pic's .
Thanks,

If you will post pictures of whatever you have, I'm sure that you'll have plenty of replies....

and picks of any other boat related gear that he aquired, pumps ,bronze fittings, electronics etc are all valuable,im sure you will get a fair appraisal of their current value, and quite possably sell them on the forum.

Re: Can someone help?

On the top there should be a number. And they'll either be aluminum or bronze or chromed bronze. And if they have a finger sticking out the top they'll be self-tailing. Barlow's have been discontinued but parts are still available.

But pictures would be great.

Sorry to hear about your husband's situation. Welcome to CF and definitely post the photos. We are a raucous bunch but we'll definitely get you a fair appraisal.

If the photos are on your hard drive you select reply to post (not quick reply) and then there is a menu bar with an icon of a photo that lets you manage attachments.

If the photos are in online storage (i.e. PhotoBucket or similar) you can post the links.

Re: Can someone help?

I'd like to offer my sympathy, as my mother has Alzheimer's.

If you're near Ft Lauderdale, IIRC 'Sailorman' sells stuff on consignment

Re: Can someone help?

I notice that you are in Deltaville. We stayed a month in the Fishing Bay Marina and found the folks there to be honest and friendly. I would start here. Be honest and up-front about your problem. They will help.

Americans are good peeps. Harley

Barlow 20s - about $100 used & overhauled. Probably ~$50 in your condition.

You might think about gathering up all the deck gear and sell in one lot. All and any electronics and sell in one lot. Etc.

If you are thinking about selling the boat you could bundle it all together. Extra parts for rebuild could be a selling feature.

Re: Can someone help?

Hi There.

Barlow are great Ozzie winches but as a previous post said they are no longer made. Parts are hard to find.

I traded my 40 year old Barlows in for new Hutton self tailers and I was able to get $150 trade in per winch. The bearings were shot and they were, I gather, reconditioned by Hutton (or Hutton Arco as it is known) for resale.

So in short - they may be worth something if you approach Arco Hutton. I have found them a friendly family company and pretty easy to deal with.

Web site:
HUTTON-ARCO Yacht Winches

Good luck with this.
