We are planning to sail Cairns to Darwin leaving approx 12 July 18 for a month and would appreciate any input on the bests stopovers and cruise plans. TIA

G'day Dave.

While I have not yet sailed there, it is a place I would like to sail, visit, and explore as crew on a sailboat.

I have done some reading about the area already, as I would like to crew for folks going around Australia, or parts of it.

This is one book I had on my research list. I have not read it yet.

Welcome aboard Dave! There are many members here from you area I believe, they'll probably chime in soon. In fact I think there are one or two threads on that area... try the search function.. perhaps including Gulf of Carpentaria. Good luck!

There are 3 books that I found.

This one looks the best. It doesn't give you ideas of what to see etc.. but does give you the anchorages. Below are some scans of what the book details.

One of the others Cairns 2 Darwin comes with some poor press from a couple of reports regarding the accuracy of the mud maps.

Kimberley Coast Cruising Yacht Club - here Publications | Kimberley Coast Cruising Yacht Club has some good recommendations.

Are you thinking of going further around to the Kimberley's ? It would be a shame to be so close and not have a look.

You can down load a great book for free here - Western Australian Cruising Guide It is a great read that might tempt you and the KCCYC is an excellent site that has great deal of info as well.
