You do not have to import the boat for 3 years unless you are a citizen or a full time resident of OZ.

Anyway, he is going to the Solomon Islands.

Airplanes go there.

We have someone with unknown experience, on both a schedule and a strict budget.

You want to take a 20 footer to the Sollies, be my guest. The trip back from there was fairlly taxing in a 36 footer. 'Twas why I steered him to larger boats.

Jim, i am not about to rush or step out too fast, just maybe a little far. The work is the point of my trip, but i am not driven by any timetable except that which i set. I am not a total novice, i have worked on, with and under the sea most of my life and already have a range of skills from navigation to splicing rope and wire. My sailing is limited to a summer playing with a hobie cat but i have no intention of sailing into the sunset until i know how to do it.

I need a cheap enough boat that will sleep me and get me from place to place at least as far as the bottom of the Solomon Islands, further if I feel safe enough.
