A bit of
research indicates that Awinya in the dialect of the Butchulla people, who are native to the Fraser region might mean "Mosquito".. I haven't been able to definitively tie it down though.
There's an Awinya creek on Fraser island (also known as K'gari (paradise)). Having kayaked up that way a few times, I can attest that the name suits the location. Fraser is paradise - but the mozzies can be a bit fierce up Awinya way.
On the other hand, there's a great bit of coffee rock just off Awinya that regularly produces some real nice
fish; tuna, mackeral and the occasional black marlin - so it's worth the occasional flying critter hanging around.
