I might be able to help there Pete.

A bit of research indicates that Awinya in the dialect of the Butchulla people, who are native to the Fraser region might mean "Mosquito".. I haven't been able to definitively tie it down though.

There's an Awinya creek on Fraser island (also known as K'gari (paradise)). Having kayaked up that way a few times, I can attest that the name suits the location. Fraser is paradise - but the mozzies can be a bit fierce up Awinya way.

On the other hand, there's a great bit of coffee rock just off Awinya that regularly produces some real nice fish; tuna, mackeral and the occasional black marlin - so it's worth the occasional flying critter hanging around.

Yep. Hi Awinya. She was named after Awinya creek on Fraser island, it means "big mosquito",which we didn't find out till after she was in the water. Westward is now in Hobart in a working museum. Hope all is going well, good to hear from you. Cheers.
