Anchoring Restrictions in the Med
Hi there! Planning a long term cruise in the Med next year mainly around the Balearics and Corsica with a view of wintering in Malta(marina) but while cruising was going to just throw the anchor out at any of the hundreds of bays available while travelling. What restrictions/bureaucracy would I likely meet? P.S Got to get a boat yet! That's another question!

Re: Anchoring Restrictions in the Med
Thanks, RARELY going into marina was just what I wanted to hear !. Working on a budget and wanted to gauge the amount required for the 6 to 7 months trip. I presume once your anchored there is no time restrictions, we could end up liking somewhere so much we could stay for a week or more!

We went to formentera the year before last, early in the season. Staff in the marina were as reported by many, rude offhand and tried to charge us a fortune for water we never had! Just checked prices for next year and a week in the marina in June is a thousand euros! We would obviously anchor all the time if possible but need a contingency fund should we need it. We will either go early, pre season or stay local to where we live on the costa calida. Think July and August are out- too many crazy boaters.

Just stay away from the Balearics in high season , thats my view, parties, charters , crowds. Its also in general very expensive compared to elsewhere in the med.
Out of the high season, its very nice.

Re: Anchoring Restrictions in the Med
Since you don't have a boat yet, you really have a lot of work to do in a short time. My advise is to get twice the size anchor as you think you'll need and a whole lot of chain.
The seabed in the Balearics has a lot of weed. It generally isn't deep in the bays though. Corsica had a lot of good sand but we found the bays fairly exposed.
Do not miss Elba.

Re: Anchoring Restrictions in the Med
One more thing. If your not good at tying off your stern to shore, start to practice right away. We are not great at it yet, but being good has opened up twice the anchorages available compared to just "just throwing the anchor out ".
My number 1 seamanship goal for next season is to move from good to great on anchoring in tight, possibly very tight given the size of our boat (1500 sf), anchorages.

I'm looking for advice on anchoring locations in Formentera, I'm aware of the sea grass restrictions.
