Aloha from Honolulu

Hi my name is Nick and I am the Newest member.

I have enjoyed the forum for a while and decided to join.

My wife and I live in Honolulu and are looking forward to purchasing a performance cruiser in the near future and retiring for a few years.

I have made a few offers in the last 2 years and hope to settle on a one soon. We have a tentative eye on an Oyster LW 48.

I have owned a Ranger 23 and sailed/raced many others. Delivered a Beneteau 423 from here to San Fran last year.

I am also a retired Navy Chief. I like being at sea and would to get back out there.

I look forward to being an active member

Hello Nick,
Oyster 48 is a sweet boat. My first boat was a ranger 23, great boat.
Welcome
Erika

Hi Erika. I loved that Ranger. I lucked into it for a first boat. If I had 3 hours to spare I was on the water sailing. I spent a lot of time exploring into Canada. Victoria is my favorite city I have seen. Great cruising up there.
Thanks for the welcome

Aloha Chief,
Retired Navy here too.
Welcome aboard! My first boat was a Catalina 22 that I sailed out of Pearl Harbor. My next was a Mariner 35 that I sailed to Bremerton and now I have a Cascade 42. I prefer the 32-36 LOD boats and simplicity. Just sailed/crewed a Columbia 28 from Ala Wai to Manele Bay to Hilo this last week and had a ball.
Good to have you here.
Kind regards,
JohnL

Well we finally settled on a boat. We bought Gypsy, a Swan 46 in North Carolina and will be cruising it this winter headed back to Hawaii via the ditch.
We have sold most of our household and will be heading to North Carolina to start hopping down the coast for a Nov-Dec start from the Keys.
Open to any advice..... Thanks, Nick

If you are planning on renting a slip at one of the public marinas, and you haven't done so already, apply for your slip ASAP. You do not need a boat to do so, just an estimate of the length. There is a pretty long waiting list, but definitely worth it!

Hi John,
Sorry I just saw this!
Well we still haven't made it to Honolulu as we haven't been able to get a slip yet. I applied to a few places we were interested in but as you know, it takes years and years.
We have been in the bay area waiting and doing upgrades to the boat and missing home immensely.
Thanks for the kind note and hope we can sail together soon.
Nick.

Re: Aloha from Honolulu

The islands are still here and you must at least be approaching the upper half of a waiting list. Are you on the lists for Pearl Harbor and Kaneohe?

Hope you can make it soon.

kind regards,

Re: Aloha from Honolulu

Hi John, I am on the lsit at Ala Wai, 6 pages back still. Also at rainbow bay. Not aware of K-bay opportunities. There was one private marina but I draw way too much, 8'3". We thought we had one at Kewalo basin but it didnt pan out. Yacht clubs are all backed up for years. Considering outer islands.
We want to live aboard and have a small dog which of course complicates things. Considering checking the military marina in San Diego to get out of the cold winters here. My blood has thinned from all the years in paradise.
Aloha~

Hey TB, Sorry you are stuck in the Great State of TEXAS.
I sailed into Galveston from Key West. Tough sailing around Tx! Oil rigs, traffic!!!, bad holding grounds, hot humid, storms etc.
I shipped my boat to San Francisco.

Re: Aloha from Honolulu

The Marine Base at Kaneohe has slips but I don't know about your draft the draft.

San Diego has Fiddler's Cove but, again, I don't know the draft.

Good luck.
