all in a name

Hi everyone. A search of "live aboard marinas" led me here! I'm beginning to explore the possibility of living aboard a sailboat. With one child out of college and launched, another soon to be launched, my spouse and I are plotting our course, as it were. I love being in, on or near the ocean and do a little surfing as well. Since childhood I've been fascinated by boats of all types. My wife, on the other hand does not swim, nor will she board a boat, the SI Ferry excepted. So, we are contemplating a shift to more of a long distance type marriage, wherein she would live very happily in a small Manhattan apartment, whilst I would take up residence on a sailing vessel of some sort and ply the waters of the eastern US seaboard.

My sailing experience is limited to daily sailing for a couple of weeks on a lake as a teenager aboard a Star class. And, to sailing with a friend in the lower NY bay, and Raritan bay on his homebuilt sailboat. (He is of Norwegian descent, was a US Marine, and is indeed a master mariner, boatwright, mechanic, welder, etc. He is a commercial hardhat diver by trade. If I were to actually reach the point of getting a boat, he would be my mentor.)

Anyway, I'm hoping to turn fantasy into reality!

So, I'll be spending some time here trying to learn what I can. And hoping I don't get totally flamed!

Hey Wannabe...welcome to the forum.
My wife was also not a boat person...at all, but surprise, surprise, shes starting to enjoy it.
When you use our search tool always use the second box "Google Custom Search" tool.
The top one is pretty much useless.

Re: all in a name

Hopefully your wife is patient, and understanding. Sailing became a wedge in a few of my relationships. I had already bought Imagine before I met my wife. One day she asked "What if I can't get on the boat?" I told her not to marry me then.

She was much like your wife. She couldn't swim, and was revived from drowning years ago. Here we sit in Panama on Imagine nearly 9 years later. She swims, enjoys the sailing, and even tolerates very snotty weather along side me. We have together nearly 17,000 miles with Imagine, so there is hope. BEST WISHES in your future life of sailing......i2f

If we got close we would have to see you. The cane season looks to be getting an early start. We are sitting tight for another week to wait, and see.........i2f

Re: all in a name

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. If your wife has any curiosity at all about sailing it'd be good to involve her in swimming and a basic sailing lesson to see if there is any chance to include her.
kind regards,
