Hello everyone,

Avid reader of the forum for a few years, figured now is a good time to introduce myself.

My first question; what is the best blue water charter catamaran between 40-50 feet for a novice sailor to take on a circumnav…

just kidding! Currently in Grenada finalizing the purchase of my new to me vessel; Alcazar. She’s a unique 47 ft cat in strip planked red cedar, a Georg Nissen design built in Germany in the early 90’s. Plan is to cruise the Caribbean with hopes to eventually visit remote faraway places.

I have learned a whole lot from this forum and it’s members and I hope to be able to start contributing something of value as I start to have more meaningful experience!

Looks like a nice and interesting boat

I don't think I have ever seen a catamaran with a dedicated 'watch berth' on the bridge deck - that's really unique (I looked the boat up online for more photos).

Seems like the boat might also be a good candidate for a 3ft / 1m transom extension too, to clean up the stern, add some waterline, and give you a nice swim platform there.

The ‘reading nook’ as the owner calls it is unique as far as I’ve seen. Has a pass through window to the helm so I think the idea is that skipper sleeps there and whoever is on watch can always wake them easily if they are needed. We will see how it ends up functioning but I like the idea and think it’s well executed.




I agree about the transom extensions, the thought has crossed my mind. I hope to own the boat for a long time so may be something I undertake a few years from now when I’m more confident about the design I would want. She has a masthead rig which is not typical for a catamaran these days so she does feel a bit different than the big mainsail driven boats I’ve been sailing, this difference in design should effect things in ways I don’t yet have a feel for.

The initial inquiry on this boat started 6 months ago so I have already had enough time to start overthinking everything

Side note: I keep pulling older photos because all the ones I took with my phone seem to be too large for the forum, I wonder if anyone knows an easy way to make them comply if working from an iPhone.
