Absolute beginner who's won a bit of money and wants to buy a boat!

Hi all completely new to boats (aside from renting peddlos in regents park!).

So I came into some money recently and thought about investing in a boat.

I live in London but am moving to Israel soon and thought about buying one in Greece or Cyprus as they seem to be more reasonably priced and sailing it over to Israel.

Is there anyone who could advise me on the following;

1. Which boat should I buy. Budget is between 10-25000£ and should I buy new or 2nd hand if I have no experience at all with boats.

2.How does it work with driving licenses etc. Do I need to do a course on driving?

3. Can I literally sail the boat into a port in Israel and have it moored there?

4. What are average maintenance costs?

Any help appreciated!
Ben

I don't want to sound like a defeatist , but boats are not investments , they are exact opposites . If you have never sailed or piloted a boat I would advise going to a local marina/yacht club and see if someone would "show "you the ropes , I have taken people out and given them the 4hr tour . With 20k to spend you could find an older boat that can be rewarding - stay away from projects unless you know how to do the work. You should take a coast guard course to learn the rules of the water. I have found the biggest expense to be dockage in rural Maryland it goes for 2200 year , then you need to haul at least once a year in winter and paint the bottom , and give a few thousand to the marine store . Think about sailling to Israel in a few years

"Invest" is a colloquialism often used when talking about purchasing something.

Sure.
  1. Complete your move to Israel
  2. Read up on the ISA, sailing clubs and schools, and anything about sailing in Israel
  3. Take some sailing lessons
  4. Make some sailing friends there, see what they sail

Troll on lockdown, but who wouldn't love to be having a beer next to someone like that? Fill their head with the romance of the sea, and exploding black water tanks.... I'm now gonna bar hop in the next room of my house.

The proverb goes:
Q: What's the best way to make a small fortune with boat?
A: Start with a large fortune.

Benissimo1102, I'll assume your question was made pure of heart. But honestly lad/lass, it demonstrates so little awareness that it's impossible to even begin. There are known knowns, then there are known unknowns, and finally there are unknown unknows. Your questions place you even earlier in this chain.

Best advice is to read a book on sailing and cruise. It doesn't matter which book at this point. Anything will help. Once you've got some sense of the known knowns then, by all means, come back and post all the questions you've got. There is a wealth of knowledge here, but you gotta come some way on your own first.

Benny if you are "Fair Dinkum" I suggest you invest a couple of quid and read this book.

He was no more a fool than you and had a heck of an adventure.

Hey Fore and Aft,

I thought I'd read all the entertaining sailing books out there years ago. Looks like your suggestion is a funny one - which I could sure use right about now, in inclement Toronto where the entire city is on lockdown - except for those "lucky" essentials of which I'm one. And I have to tell you, at this point, I am sooooo tired!

Thanks for the book recommendation,
Warmly,

I was recently in Israel and asked after some port options and prices... Jaffa old harbor is booked out permanently, as is the one in haifa. But these are small atmospheric places I like. The big new one north of tel aviv is frighteningly expensive, but has places. If you're budget is so low (sorry) first price a slip or you might be tremendously sorry later...

Beat me to it...the low end of his buying budget could easily get eaten up with 1 yr of slip fees and maintenance (if nothing really bad goes wrong with the boat)
