A Dream: Hi Everyone !

Ya know when people say "My dream as always been to...." and you wonder when exactly is always? They weren't just born wanting that. Well my dream has always been to sail the Atlantic from the US to Europe alone or with one other friend and by always I mean since a month ago. I know little about sailing but I was raised on the Tennessee river and have driven pontoon boats and jetski's since I was 12 (20 now) so it was only a matter of time before I wanted to venture out. I have TONS of questions because I know NOTHING about sailing BUT before I turn 40 I WILL have sailed the Atlantic. I hope to become a part of this community and hope to welcomed amongst it. Thank you all.

Re: A Dream, HI EVERYONE

Just takes time, money, and persistence. If you lack one just make up for it with the others. Not trying to be trite, but just come up with a good plan and step through it one foot at a time and before you know it you'll be there.

Re: A Dream: Hi Everyone !

Greetings and salutations!

you say that you're twenty now...
and you hope to complete a sail across the atlantic ocean before you arrive at fourty...

if you give yourself that kind of time-gap with ANYTHING in life then you are sure to accomplish very little.

continue to post on this forum and learn everything you can. take a class, read a book, make contacts where you can. approach this adventure like it really is your dream and you'll have success.

i'm not your grandpa telling you this, i'm only a handful or two older than you, and in the same boat [excuse the pun].

Re: A Dream: Hi Everyone !

Welcome aboard.

This is a dream I suspect several of us have on this site.

Focus on the goal and do something everyday to reach it. I am sure you will accomplish it.

We are pushing to reach the dream too.

Best Regards,
DJ

Re: A Dream: Hi Everyone !

Welcome aboard and go man go ...be careful and dont look back the world is your oyster and not all have pearls..Im 46 and when I was your age everyone had upward mobility available to them ..one could for a few hundred dollars get on a plane and go to places like Jamaica,Mexico,Canada and several other places without a passport, times are a changing and the days of upward mobility are disappearing fast... you need to move now, dont wait if you are serious about your plans... things are changing and it does'nt seem to be as easy as it once was to go out in the world and have a good time ...my generation had it made for at least 40 years, rock concerts, partying, travel, jobs, money,it was a blast,(and now we are paying for all that freedom,as freedom isnt free) but alas all good things must come to an end and it seems to be slowing down, going from upward mobility to no mobility..dont mean to sound like a negative tool but its easy to see for ones self just look around...I didnt coin the phrase"upward mobility" an 80 yr. old man said it to me one day after talking about life and he said when he was my age 2o or so at the time that it was impossable for him to get on a plane or a car and go many miles away from where he was born...and so he said the differance between himself and me was "upward mobility" and he was right ...so grab a hold and dont let go and you just may have the time of your life!!Be safe fair winds and far places DVC

Welcome!

Time on the water is good. Meeting other sailors will be good for making your plan come to life.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. Just start with a basic sailing book and a basic sailing class. "Start Sailing Right!" is the book I recommend. The book will only provide written instruction but the class will give you practical application.
kind regards,
