Will we still need or want to sail?

In recent times we all know that technology has made great leaps and bounds, just as the industrial revolution changed the world, how much further will the technology revolution change the world we live in?

With recent advances in the Oculus Rift program, virtual world, almost Star Trek like, Holodecks are looking more and more likely as a reality for us to play in, in this generation (see Star Trek Holodeck Becomes Reality With Oculus Rift, Results Are Impressive | WebProNews). Imagine, you could jump into the program and feel like you just skippered Australia II in the final race in 83 (I'm an Aussie) or that you just cruised to your favourite little bay on the other side of the world and had a great lunch and still be home in time to greet your better half.

And it will all feel real!

Will we still need boats, sailing or any other physical activity for that matter or are we destined to become the generation that destroys humanity through outright laziness and inactivity.

Maybe we already are a bunch of "brains" plugged into a matrix...

Too deep I can't swim!

Your future is alarmingly depressing. People will still be going outside a lot for a while to come. Indoor activities or outdoor. Everyone will choose their experiences. The issue is the growing leisure time we have - predominantly filled with pointless activity.

Well at least your activity. My activity is pretty important -

Re: Will we still need or want to sail?

It may look, and sound, and even smell real, but it won't REALLY be real. And the person playing the computer game will know that.

I don't want a pretend experience, no matter how real it may seem. I want a REAL experience. I think that there will always be a lot of people who feel that way.

Most of the time I don't even bother taking my laptop on the boat.

I enjoy the boat too much to do that to her.

Re: Will we still need or want to sail?

Having worked on some of the best driving simulators around you quickly realise how limited simulation technologies are to the real world.

I've tried many of the current VR headsets too. While they've advanced greatly they aren't a replacement for real life. Sailing is an experiential endeavour. It takes a lot if practice to become confident and competent. VR has a role to play but it isn't a very attractive replacement IMHO.

There are some interesting applications where VR can enhance safety and situational awareness that I'm interested in. For example using VR headset to replace radar displays in low visibility situations where optical, near infra red, radar and AIS data could be overlaid.

If you look at productivity and happiness data it's pretty clear the the so-called information and knowledge revolution has been nowhere as beneficial to us as the industrial revolution. Playing games is only a niche activity but for some it's their whole life.

See, to me, it doesn't even matter how good the simulation is. It could be perfect. It could be so good that, while you're in it, you really can't tell it from real life. Would not matter in the least. You would still know, inside, that you were just playing a computer game, and that it was not real. That makes all the difference.
