Why do people feed the trolls?

I think it's because some troll comments represent a caricature of a real belief or problem. People want to address this belief/problem but don't realize that lecturing a troll is a suckers game (or they just don't care that it's a losing game).

Obviously this doesn't cover all trolling cases. If someone just insults your mother or calls you ugly there really isn't much more to it.

There's more than one meaning of "troll". I prefer to think of them in the mythological/folklore sense.

Where I come from I think this is classic! We would battle to prove it was not a legitimate comment from one of our politicians! Like the reason our dams are so low is because they were built too big!

Trolls are generally Dunning-Kruger personalities, and it can be difficult to resist a fair response. It's still popular for them because trolls never lose among their ilk.
