Solar rooftops systems fail as smoke from California wildfires blocks sunlight

When deadly wildfires tinted Western skies a Martian hue this week, homeowners with their own rooftop solar systems were able to tell with great precision just how much useful sunlight reached them through the gloom: next to none.
The solar blackouts highlight a cruel irony of life amid California's climate crisis: Over the last few years, homeowners began investing in rooftop systems and batteries to hedge against intentional power outages aimed at preventing wildfires. But now some blazes have become so large, they're effectively shutting down the solar.

I'm on Vancouver Island right now, up-islands north of Comox, and the skies are muted grey/yellow, and the fine particulate is visible in the air.

Lori Mallory Eckhart took these remarkable photos of the Claremont-Bear Fire September 8, 2020, the day it made a massive run west to Oroville, California increasing in size by more than 100,000 acres in 24 hours.
The white cloud above the smoke is a pyrocumulus cloud produced by the intense heating of the air over a fire. This induces convection, which causes the air mass to rise to a point of stability, where condensation occurs. If the fire is large enough, the cloud may continue to grow, becoming a cumulonimbus flammagenitus which may produce lightning and start another fire.

Re: US West Coast WildFires

We are in Gig Harbor near Tacoma, WA at the moment.

The smoke has gotten progressively worse over the last 4 days or so. It got noticeably worse as I came south from Seattle yesterday. Currently it is affecting the coastal areas also; on of my kids is currently bow hunting on the Olympic Peninsula and he says the smoke is very thick even though there are no fires on the Peninsula.

Local forecasts have rescinded their original one of partial clearing on Monday to a forecast of unknown timeframe.

Kind of like living in a Sepia photograph

Re: US West Coast WildFires

Wildfires, raging in the US West, have killed at least 33 people, with dozens of others missing, and tens of thousands more in California, Oregon and Washington forced to flee their homes.
The death toll is likely to climb, with one Oregon official warning of a "mass fatality incident."

Even here at mid-Vancouver Island it's thicker today. Sure feel for you folks down south.

Re: US West Coast WildFires

Wildfires in Washington and Oregon mean Vancouver's, BC, air quality now ranks among the worst in the world, on along with that in Portland, Ore., and San Francisco, Ca.
The air quality health index ranks risk from low to high, on a scale of one to 10, but the current risk goes beyond that level, and is listed as 10-plus.

Respite expected in Metro Vancouver from smoke of deadly U.S. wildfires
“An infusion of Pacific air moving into the region overnight (Sunday) is expected to give Metro Vancouver and the South Coast some relief from the thick smoke from wildfires all along the U.S. West Coast that had Vancouver vying over the weekend with Portland, Ore., for the title of world’s worst air quality ...”

Re: US West Coast WildFires

Fires have become more frequent all over the world and what is terrible - they are difficult to extinguish. And not only the amount of heat and combustion products in the atmosphere is bad, but also the death of tens of thousands of animals and birds. Now we may not notice this, but in a few years the disruption of the ecosystem will make itself felt.

Re: US West Coast WildFires

Has anyone hypothesized that the smoke will create so much shade that it will actually cause cooling? Similar to what happened after Krakatoa erupted?
