The useless dream boat I will never buy

I'm not talking about a bigger boat, or moving from a monhull to a cat. I'm talking about that boat or style that catches your eye. You know, the genre that doesn't really fit, but damn it would be a blast. If you were suddenly filthy rich you'd buy one.

For decades I've told myself that when gas (in USA) hit $5/gallon I would buy myself a Cigarette boat- after all, it would be a cheap buy then. I occasionally search YW for the very old Cigarettes, sigh, and move on.

But my real hidden desire is the former USCG 44' MLB. I like rough weather- as my friends know, Small Craft Warnings means "let's go sailing!" I dream of strapping a few buddies into a 44 MLB and heading out when not even USCG wants to go out.

Yes, they are available. And, I could probably afford one. But I'm not going to do it. I don't need another project. But I can only imagine how much fun I could have...

Anyone else have a hidden favorite that makes no sense and won't be procured, but is always on your mind?

One guy in California outfitted several as recreational vehicles in the 50's.
They have incredible range, well over 3,000 miles I think.
In Florida, maybe Port St Lucie, I have seen I think Grumman Mallards set up the same way, but they don't have nearly as long a legs as the Catalina I don't think.

Re: The useless dream boat I will never buy

I dont know about a boat that I will never buy, but mounting a deck gun on the bow my Col 26 is something that I'd always love to do but probably never will. If I ever do that will be the last time a displacement hull cuts me off and runs me aground in a narrow channel, that's for sure.

When in the US Coast Guard I few on Grumman HU-16's. Sweet but loud. Just crying for a turbo prop conversion. Jimmie Buffet has/had one, piston job.

Something with a camera so it could be shot from inside the cabin would be nice. Like a video game. Might free up some anchoring space in a busy anchorage quite quickly.

LOL

Re: The useless dream boat I will never buy

I just returned from lunch where we were overlooking an HU16 that sold for $2500 a couple of years ago. No engines and bad spars, but I thought you could make a great B&B out of it, or if you were really crazy you could make it airworthy for about $2,500,000. Yachts are not the only things you can buy cheep and spend a whole lot of money on. ____Grant.

This little boat keeps calling me. Makes no sense, it's a ton of work but she calls. I found a sweet 28' bristol channel cutter that screams to me but it make's sense. $3000, been for sale along time, maybe pick it up for 1500? huummmm.

You will find antique airplanes all over, I even have a 1946, but you never see antique helicopters.

Your plane is really old, mine is a modern 1947 with wood wings, but I would never own a wood boat. Does that make any sense??? Grant.

That would be awesome to have!

This is my favorite: 1924 ferry

I could make it beyond stunning inside. Definitely not something that makes sense for me at all, I would still love to have it. I've been drooling over it for a few weeks.
