Re: The New Joke Thread

Read "not PC enough for me on the race question" when someone is described by someone else as 'racist'....

"Your" Founding Father is someone else's "racist".

Have to admit I'm in favour of the 'revisionist' argument, but only where it is explanatory, not when it involves erasure.

I mean, everyone thought Prince Andrew was a great guy - until they didn't....

'Mad' King George we now believe suffered from a rare illness that caused his delusional state and weird behaviours. But for 200 years he was just 'Mad' King George.

I'd be happy if a Washington statue pointed out in the explanatory text at the base that he had been a slave owner, that this was consideed OK at the time, but is no longer. Then point out the 'founding father' stuff.

We have a similar issue over here with Captain Cook. Great navigator. Not so great on race relations. Aborigines = 0; Hawaiians = 1; Cook = debatable.

Again, revised explanatory text on the base of the statue I think would be fine to put the erection of the statue in historic context.

But as someone pointed out on another thread elsewhere, there was a guy described as beating his wife to a pulp then dragging her home by one leg, who had a headland on Sydney harbour named after him. Yeah, Bennelong, was his name.

So if a statue of Bennelong (best known Aborigine of the Eora people of Sydney, friend/slave to Gov Phillip, travelled to England, met the King etc) was proposed, it might need to include something about Aboriginal culture being a bit misogynist at the time, and wife-bashing being commonplace, at the time.

Arguably, based on the domestic violence stats in indigenous communities, not much has changed. Arguably...

I was taught at university that the point of history (and the study of History) is to learn from our mistakes.

Given what's happening in Poland at the moment, and in Turkey, Russia, China and other authoritarian-governed states, I'm not so sure that we have...

Back in the day, those opposed to the sacking of the Whitlam govt by Gov/Gen John Kerr were pleased to buy dunny rolls (bog rolls, TP) with the name and or face of Whitlam's nemesis, Malcolm Fraser, on them. Recently, someone gave me a roll of Donald Trump TP. Plus ca change....

Speaking of TP, does anyone remember the famous John Wayne TP joke?

In London, south-Asian feller goes into his local corner shop, bag of bog rolls in hand and complains (in lilting South Asian accent) that the product is deficient as it is "John Wayne Toilet Paper".

The Asian store owner asks: "What do you mean, John Wayne toilet paper?"

The customer replies: "It don't take no **** from no Indian!"

A little COVID-crisis jockule for yez all....

Re: The New Joke Thread

There's good and bad in everyone we meet or learn about.

Popular History puts that into the context of whomever was deemed to be notable enough for a statue was not nececessay good or bad, but influential to the region.

Reasonable people understand this and see them simply as historical landmarks.

Unreasonable people see oppressive symbols in every shadow that catches their angry eyes.

We all should follow the attitude of Will Rogers....

Sadly, have met a few I loathed on sight.

Further interactions only confirmed the initial impression - oxygen thieves.

tread carefully there, Pelagic. Over here (Austria) not so long ago we had a "very influential (& not only "for the region"...) person" of whom very few would want a statue...

And how many were upset to see the downing of statues of Stalin or Saddam Hussein when their 'regimes' fell or sometime thereafter. I read that a statue of Lenin has just been inaugurated in Germany https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/20/lenin-statue-to-be-unveiled-in-west-germany-despite-legal-fight

In many ways I think that letting the statues of the 'bad people' stand is a reminder of what they were (providing a plaque provides context). I could live with the above examples, except perhaps for AH.

Only in kind, by senior CF members inviting mods for holidays on their yachts as an R&R package.

Your invite for next month is accepted btw , should I bring diving and fishing kit? what about guns, do you allow them in florida?

You do have a modern generation anchor don't you? wouldn't want to be seen hauling up some old CQR now would I. Have to think about the street cred on FB.
