There was something in my (eclectic) news feed about that the other day. Something about one Alaskan island being cut by the international date line, depending on which map projection is being used. Of course, politically the entire state is in one time zone. But still...

Where you referencing that?

(Whatever/wherever that info might be methinks it's lost to me for now - the price paid for clearing up history, cookies and cache during shutdown.)

There are a bunch of little Alsakan islands in the Eastern Hemisphere. The furthest west is Attu.

Semisopochnoi crosses 180d longitude so it is both the eastern-most and western-most by certain definitions.

Edit: Semisopochnoi is the first island west of 180 but is not on the line so it is not both.

So was "Attu" the fist words spoken when the native Islanders met the white man?

Re: The New Joke Thread

Semisopochnoi 51°57′05″N 179°36′03″E

We know that the international date line (IDL) doesn't follow longitude 180 - heck, just look at a map showing Samoa vs American Samoa.

Okay, but my comment/question was about an Alaskan island (or part thereof) being on the Russian, non-USA side of the IDL depending on map projection choice or zoom-in capabilities.

Sorry for the thread drift. If somebody wants further discussion PM me and we'll start a different thread.

It's the joke thread. Drift is to be expected

It's the longitude, not an arbitrary time division that make is "east most".
All of Alaska is in the same time zone so by definition, all Alaskan islands are on the US side

Samoa is one case, but take a look at what it does around Kiribati
