And the coyotes have had the last laugh - it's my understanding that they are one of the few native North American species that have increased their range since colonization and urbanization. There were a lot where I grew up and they are smart and adaptable buggers.

Since it's the joke thread: I once heard a story about English expats in southern Saskatchewan in the early 1900's who set up a fox hunt club like they had back home. Except, there being few foxes in the area, they decided to hunt coyotes instead.

As the story goes, they never managed to catch one. So I guess the joke was on them.

Exactly right.

Onward to more giggles.

HA, the opposite. too many life guards and a shallow end on the pool. The weak that nature would dispose of survive to breed.

Your professor was wrong!

The nature of humor is breaking an expectation without breaking logic.

And example of this is the riddle;
Q: What do you call the cross between a parrot and a tiger?
A: You call it whatever it tells you to call it.

For most people there would be a pre-existing expectation that the answer is some sort of linguistic mashup of the words tiger and parrot but the answer is something different so the expectation is broken though the answer is otherwise "valid".

There are plenty of other examples of this.

I accept that a certain amount of humor involves putting down certain classes or groups of people based their characteristics or the characteristics that outsiders ascribe to them (stereotyping). But to say that almost all humor is this way strikes me as narrow and provincial.

I have a wide repretoir of off color jokes which I regularly repeat. But even I, as a slow learner, figured out that you have to pick your audience for certain jokes.

This is a wide open audience here, not a group of the good old boys.

Also, just because you were impressed doesn't mean you professor was that smart.
